State Assemblymember Claire Valdez just clinched a victory over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the NY-7 congressional race.
The race between Valdez and Reynoso (hand-picked by the seat’s outgoing congresswoman, Nydia Velázquez) was largely seen as a referendum on new mayor Zohran Mamdani’s political influence and that of his political home base, the DSA. The results from last night give him a pretty resounding mandate in our neck of the woods (spanning Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Long Island City, Ridgewood, and Bushwick).
Polls showed Valdez and Reynoso running a tight race, but she ultimately garnered more support, with 56% of the vote (as of this reporting) to Reynoso’s 36%. City Council Member Julie Won earned about 6%, with Vichal Kumar at nearly 2%.
Valdez joins the two other Mamdani-endorsed candidates who won their races last night, including Brad Lander in NY-10, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, who ousted the long-serving Adriano Espaillat in NY-13. Overall, the night saw an almost complete sweep by DSA candidates, as the organization picked up seats in other key races.
Valdez now faces a general election in November, but in such a heavily Democratic district, she’s all but certain to win.
The area’s other race has been a more subdued affair. Incumbent assemblymember Emily Gallagher fended off challenger Andrew Bodiford for a second time.
