Why a group show? Just Friends at Greenpoint’s M. Carter space (141 Engert Ave) is a mix of small works by fifteen artists showing the shape-shifting looseness of group shows at a time when the white cube no longer distinguishes from the bricolage of the street. A poster on the window lists all of the brain storming suggestions for titles before circling the final name at the bottom – an invitation to enter the gallery before the actual art inside demonstrates the real interaction of variety more than a statement ever can. One of the most thought-provoking art shows I’ve seen this season is Wangechi Mutu’s “A Fantastic Journey,” housed in the phenomenal Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Sunday March 9th, is the last day to see it, so get moving!
Mutu’s swarming, contorted collages create alien female forms from found images, magazine cutouts, and paint. Mutu was born in Nairobi and her concern with transnationalism has a strong presence in her collages, as does her view of American culture and mass consumerism from a place of outsiderness. There is a definite ode to African dance in the work, fused with American gender-based images like polished lips from fashion magazines, body parts from porn stills, and even war photographs. The result are post-apocalyptic portraits of mutilation, consumerism, rebirth, and womanhood that are shocking and fascinating to see up close. Continue reading

Greenpoint Gallery Night is this Friday 2/7 from 6-9pm. While in the past this map has only been available online for download, the Gallery Night HQ Galleries at 67 West St will have printed maps available for those of you still using flip phones.
Last week we introduced all the new galleries in Greenpoint, but there are over a dozen locations where you will find great local art on exhibit. See you Friday!
The first Greenpoint Gallery Night of 2014 is taking place on Friday, February 7th from 6-9pm and there is a lot of great artwork to see in the neighborhood. As an influx of new restaurants and shops seems to be taking center stage and giving us endless food and fashion options – lots of art galleries are also opening under the radar with works from talented local artists.
