On Wednesday’s crisp afternoon, a crowd that estimated itself at somewhere between 65 and 100 gathered to renew the call to action to prevent two (literally) looming developments from progressing without further input from the community. Organized by city council hopeful Stephen Pierson and neighborhood organization Save Greenpoint, the gathering was intended to raise awareness and support for a campaign of legal and community actions intended to prevent or at least stall the currently planned waterfront developments from manifesting in their presently intended forms. This week’s CB1 ULURP hearing focused on the development at 77 Commercial St. which is just up Newton Creek from the Greenpoint Landing project that we covered last week. 77 Commercial street is currently a vacant commercial building that was purchased in 2012 by Manhattan-based developers, Chetrit Group. What makes this development notable is that it sits next to the long promised, but never delivered Box Street Park at 65 Commercial Street. Continue reading
The ULURP process has begun for the impending Greenpoint Landing development on the Greenpoint waterfront, which is a 22-acre, 10-tower development that will radically impact Greenpoint life as we know it. Just thinking about the G Train with possibly 10,000 new commuters is mind boggling.
Unless we take on the huge task of trying to REZONE the waterfront, as we learned in the recent community workshop, much of the development can be built as-of-right under the 2005 rezoning, but the developer is proposing a few changes that require consideration.

Tuesday August 13th 2013 at 6:30pm there will be a Public Hearing at Community Board 1, to take place at Automotive High School (50 Bedford Ave)
This is the first phase of the ULURP Process and it’s important you come and share your opinion on the proposed changes to the already happening development.

Also on 8/20 at 6:30pm there will be a Public Hearing on the 77 Commercial Street Project – another development; and an Informational Presentation on Newtown Barge and Box Street Parks at Automotive High School.

Are you like a lot of people wondering what ULURP means? It stands for Uniform Land Use Review Procedure, which is a standardized procedure whereby applications affecting the land use of the city would be publicly reviewed. In a nutshell, if you’re building something in the city, it needs to go through ULURP for public review and approval.
As a community, we will discuss what is “as-of-right” (per the 2005 Waterfront Rezoning) and what is still negotiable as these two developments approach certification and “ULURP” approval.
This is an opportunity to share ideas about what’s at stake, what we might gain in the ULURP process and how to prioritize our negotiating position.
Representatives from Greenpoint Landing will be making a brief presentation to familiarize everyone with the aspects of the project coming up for ULURP approval. The Center for Urban Pedagogy will be leading a workshop on how the ULURP process works.
Take advantage of this chance to get expert insight into the civic mechanism that is, typically, the last opportunity for the community to have input on impending development.
