June may be waning, but the Pride events keep a-comin’. On Friday, June 28, intimate hair salon The Karcher (760 Manhattan Avenue) is hosting a queer storytelling event with drinks and socializing to follow. Come to the second story hair boutique from at 8 PM this Friday for “What Happens to Boys In Chelsea, A Queer Story Told by Foster Lawrence.”
The Karcher has increasingly become a community events space, and this Friday will further bolster their efforts. The storytelling portion will last about 30 minutes, and then the guests will mingle and enjoy wine donated from the nearby Dandelion. The event will also provide attendees with information for how community members to get involved with SAGE, the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of older LGBTQ+ adults.
Stop by on Friday for good stories, good neighbors, and good wine!
After ten years on Greenpoint Avenue, the Karcher is moving to a new spot. Don’t worry darlings, they’re staying put in Greenpoint. The hip salon will be calling 760 Manhattan Avenue home by April 2018. The space will be on the second floor – right above the old Radioshack. We predict the new space will be full of even more rad hair styles, great times, and great fun.
And, if you have a question or two about that appointment or other services you booked, email the salon at [email protected].
As we reported earlier this week, the former bartender/manager and chef of shuttered bar The Habitat are also looking for some help after their post-Habitat plans to move to Puerto Rico were seriously derailed following the hurricane. Additionally, local salon The Karcher (72 Greenpoint Ave) is collecting used Halloween costumes, and the proceeds from the sales will benefit hurricane victims. As it turns out, there are tons of upcoming events (including two tonight!) to benefit recovery efforts—so here’s even more ways you can donate, have fun and throw back a drink or two!

Nackie Karcher and Madeline Jacobs, who are the Owner and Manager of local salon The Karcher (72 Greenpoint Avenue) have been talking about showing their support for women as well as the LGBTQ community for several months. “Since November and the election we’d been thinking about what can we do. We had pre-printed postcards for people to write their representatives sitting up at the desk for a while. We closed the day of the women’s march. And we’ve been thinking about ways we can use the space, for having community engagement. Being a queer-identified person myself… what can we do to make people feel accepted?” Madeline says.
Yesterday, the salon announced via its Instagram account that they would be offering Non-Gendered haircuts, stating, “We now offer a Non-Gendered Cut service option when booking on our website. We recognize that not everyone fits the commonly used gender binary service options and we want to make everyone feel welcome in our salon.” It was no coincidence that earlier in the day, President Trump tweeted, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.” On its Instagram post, the salon continued, “It’s a small action, but in light of today’s attack, we want to #resist how we can. You are welcome here. #transrightsarehumanrights”.Continue reading →
From the outside, The Karcher is an unassuming, if not extremely charming-looking salon. But inside, past the hair parlor and through the back door the space opens up to a sunny back garden. Owner Nackie Karcher tells me she got married in the garden, and it’s clear why. The space, private and enclosed with climbing vines feels tucked away, a gorgeous little secret. And that’s exactly the vibe of The Karcher salon and spa itself. Continue reading →
