Developers are planning to build an 11 story mixed-use residential building at 13 Greenpoint Ave. overlooking Transmitter Park. The proposed building would have 77 apartments (23 affordable) and approximately 4,700 square feet of commercial space.

Notorious Brooklyn slumlords admitted to using abusive tactics to push out tenants from five North Brooklyn buildings, including 300 Nassau Ave. A plea deal was reached resulting in a $350,000 fine and no jail time.

Greenpoint is dominated by “OIL SPILL, Polish People, and Really Cool Coffee Shop”– not a terrible summary.  Best of all though is the “Nuclear Industral (spelled wrong) Cesspool.” Even if the makers of this map couldn’t spell the word “industrial,” they did label Newtown Creek as “Mutant Alligators,” which is entirely accurate. If you’re offended, remind yourself that this is a map of STEREOTYPES, not accurate statistical facts.

Racked did a cool feature on Psyche Jewelry, which is based in Greenpoint and run by the gorgeous and talented Nina Berenato of Bushwick.  Continue reading

Slumlord Sabotage on Nassau

Many of us are all too familiar with the slummy landlord. He lurks in the dark shadows of our fair city, waiting to drain our bank accounts in exchange for cheap utilities and a security deposit that, let’s face it, is probably half-way to Mexico.

And now, he strikes again. On December 15th, an unidentified mystery person broke into 300 Nassau Avenue and smashed the building’s water main, boiler, electric meters and thermostat with an ax.

According to the tenants of the six-unit building, landlords, Aaron and Joseph Israel, were the ax wielders. Yes, dear readers, this was a potential case of SABOTAGEContinue reading
