If you have not heard from your neighbors about the Soup Kitchen + Food Pantry of the Greenpoint Reformed Church’s Hunger Program, the volunteer-based organization is a vital part of Greenpoint, for those in need. The kitchen serves more than 800 hungry people every month in the North Brooklyn Community and beyond. On Wednesday evenings, they serve a delicious community dinner. On Thursdays, they distribute groceries from the food pantry. According to the Church, “It costs about $5,000 per week to host the meal and keep food pantry running,” so they need your monetary support. If you can’t make Saturday’s event, you can still show your support by donating to the Hunger Program here, or by volunteering. Continue reading →
Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to get more involved with Greenpoint’s vibrant volunteer community? Here are five ways you can help a hardworking neighborhood volunteer program, the Greenpoint Church Hunger Program on Milton Street, to feed the folks who need a warm meal on these cold winter days.
1. Volunteer in the kitchen on a Wednesday evening between 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m and recreate that winter soup you love to Instagram. You can cook, set up, serve and/or clean, and you don’t have to show up at 3:00 p.m. If you have a day job, show up after work to see how you can help. Continue reading →
The holidays are over, but now that the swell of volunteers has come and gone, extra hands are always needed. The Church of the Ascension (127 Kent St) is moving their Hunger Program to Saturdays, serving meals for over 80 men and women in need every week. Volunteers (including children of all ages) can chip in from 9am to 1:15pm, with the option for early or late shifts. Don’t be deferred by the Church location; you don’t have to be Catholic, or any religion for that matter, to participate.
Father John Merz (not Misty) explained, “Greenpointers know about the needs of our community. Everyday we run into familiar faces in our neighborhood who don’t have enough to eat. Our team of volunteers work to provide a meal, a warm space and hospitality to these familiar faces.”
So if you’ve made a New Year’s Resolution to be a better person or do good deeds or all of the above, this is your chance.
Register for a time slot here. And check out their site for more info about the program.
Isn’t it nice to sit around and stuff your face? This is every American’s God-given right on Thanksgiving! Sadly some people don’t eat anything today – including many people in Greenpoint.
So let’s keep ALL of our neighbors full and plump this Thanksgiving, too. That’s what it’s all about, right? Sharing and caring…
If you make one click on your computer today – consider making a donation in ANY amount – $5, $10 to Greenpoint Soup Kitchen, a local non-profit that feeds the hungry not just on Thanksgiving but every week of the year!
