The Greenpoint restaurant scene offers a wealth of wonderfully diverse and exciting dining options, but for some reason, finding a soul-warming bowl of ramen has remained elusive. While the American ramen obsession has often been credited to chef David Chang and the bowls he started serving at Momofuku Noodle Bar, Japan has been riding a rollercoaster of emotion over ramen since it was brought to them by Chinese tradesmen in the nineteenth century. Over the last few decades, Japan has created museums to ramen, ramen-themed video games and has even established ramen dating services to pair you with a partner who shares your passion for the dish.
Greenpoint is long overdue for its ramen moment.
While many would lament this culinary gap and continue to accept their fate of having to venture further afield for their broth, Greenpoint resident Daniel Birnbaum decided to take matters into his own hands. Has anyone ever read Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs? It’s a kid’s book about the town of Chewandswallow. There, citizens don’t ever have to worry about stopping by a deli for milk or scouring blogs for the sexiest place to eat dinner out because their food quite literally falls from the sky. Four square meals a day come in the form of weather fronts that move through the community at a predictable pace, until one day the forecast turns on them. Earlier this year there was a miniature ruckus in the fast food world when it was announced that Jafflechutes, an innovative Melbourne-based grilled cheese concept, would be coming to NYC.
The idea behind Jafflechutes (Jaffle being the crazy Aussie term for grilled cheese) is to hurl pre-ordered grilled cheese sandwiches attached to mini-parachutes out of the sky and into the waiting arms of hungry punters. Phew! I thought the weekend might never come, but it’s officially almost here, bringing with it the things that make all that hard work worthwhile. Time for cooking real dinners (as opposed to opening a can of hominy and digging in with a spoon), time for fresh pretzels at the beer store, time to sleep in and go to the gym, time to just…enjoy. You see, life’s short. Keep your chin up! Have a mimosa! Eat a grilled cheese! And whenever I see that grilled cheese social pop-up sandwich board magically appear in our neighborhood, I’m happily reminded to do just that. I asked the lovely MacKenzie Smith of Grilled Cheese Social to share with me one of her very special sandwich recipes this week, and she answered the call with a list of ingredients that harkens back to my midwestern roots… it’s the Gouda Times: a Wisconsin-themed brat-and-gouda grilled cheese on a pretzel roll with spicy mustard. I can hear my “a”s getting more nasal-y just reading the recipe. Oh ya, you betcha! She also identified her power animal as a dachshund. A fierce breed!
