Happy Thanksgiving, Greenpoint! Wondering what was happening around town as you were gearing up for the holiday? Read on to find out!

Good thing you’re reading this after the meal, since first up is a story about overflowing sewage. Last Wednesday, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection held a public meeting regarding the City’s efforts to curb sewage overflow into places like Flushing Bay, the Bronx River, the Harlem River and our very own Newtown Creek. Over 100 people turned out to make their voices heard.

Meanwhile, some in the community felt unheard following the NYPD’s decision to promote Captain Pete Rose, head of the 94th Precinct, to the rank of Deputy Inspector on Tuesday, less than a year after Rose made a controversial statement regarding rape, saying that the crime is “a trend that we’re too worried about” given that most rapes reported in Greenpoint in 2016 were “not total-abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the streets.” As Deputy Inspector, Rose will still head the 94th Precinct.  Continue reading

Every Story Is About Congestion & Change — The Hook-Up 3/4

In January, Assemblyman Lentol announced a temporary suspension of alternate side parking rules on film shoot days, but that hasn’t stopped film crews from competing for space with residents (hearsay is that the production crew of “Tiara” blocked off a G Train entrance during rush hour). Well, if you ever wanted a quantifiable look at just how movie-famous our neighborhood is, here’s an interactive map.
 
Subway slashings have officially landed on the G Line (well, it happened once, but still). Now, police are looking to amp up NYPD presence on the trains at night.
 
You may have heard about plans to reevaluate the Meeker Avenue crossing, but the rather congested North Brooklyn is going to be the subject of a larger, more comprehensive transportation study.

Greenpoint Filming The Knick: Horses on Milton St – Today!

An awesome reader tipped me off that Milton St is covered in dirt for a movie shoot so I stopped by on my way to the office. I know some of us feel inconvenienced by film shoots in Greenpoint, but this one is way cool. Not sure about you but I’m a total sucker for period pieces and people are walking around like it’s 1906 and covered in crazy head wounds and dressing. Continue reading
