“Buoy Bingo” or “How I Learned to Donate to Charity Without Even Trying”

Looking for something to spice up your week that checks all the boxes for “excitement”, “fun” and “feel good”? Every month, The Brothers Buoy host an after-hours bingo night at neighborhood staple, Humboldt and Jackson (434 Humboldt Street). The night is like most bingo nights, with prizes, drink specials, great music and fast flying daubers. What makes this event special is that each month, the Brothers find different organizations to donate all of the profits to. In their first 5 months of running the game, they have raised almost $6,000 for various charities, including Drive Change and Team Rubicon.

This Wednesday December 13th at 8pm, they are hosting a holiday edition Ugly Sweater Bingo. They’ve partnered with Salute American Vodka, an American brand who’s mission is to help aid military veterans after they return home from service. The event is FREE, and one bingo card will set you back $2.50.

Greenpoint Buildings are the Star of a New Halloween-Themed Mobile Game

HallowsEve_Screenshot03

A just-released game for iOS and Android, Hallows’ Eve, created by longtime Greenpoint residents Randall J Lane and Judy Brown, uses Greenpoint buildings as the backdrop for a spooky cast of characters—a devil, a witch, a skeleton, catwoman, a mummy, ghosts, and a pumpkinhead. If you look closely you’ll notice the Huron Public Baths, a recognizable Army Navy shop, The Diamond bar, Word bookstore, a flower shop, wine shop and hardware store.

The game takes you on a nostalgic trick or treat adventure through Greenpoint-based streets, where you try to collect candies and avoid the “scaries,” unless you uncover the elusive full-size candy bar which will turn you invincible against their wicked ways. The eerie music has been composed by NYC-based musician Lori Scacco, and takes inspiration from 1970s Italian horror movie soundtracks, by composers such as Ennio Morricone and the band Goblin. Hallows’ Eve The Game is available for 99 cents until midnight on October 28th on Google Play and October 30 on Apple’s App store. Continue reading

Six Great Spots to Cheer on the Mets in the NL Wild Card Game Tonight

After making it all the way to the World Series last year, the New York Mets have a shot at playoff baseball for the second season in a row. They face off against the San Francisco Giants in the National League wild card game at Citi Field at 8:09pm tonight. This is do-or-die time for the Mets, as the loser of this game will hang up their cleats until next season and the winner will advance to the NLDS vs. the Chicago Cubs. It’s a home game, Mets ace Noah Syndergaard is on the mound, and the forecast calls for perfect baseball weather this evening. Now, all we can do is raise a cold glass of beer to the Amazins and hope for the best tonight. In order to help you do that, we thought we’d put together a little list of some of the best Mets/baseball hot spots around (or close to) Greenpoint!
