Every year The Diamond (43 Franklin St) – the Greenpoint bar with the gondola in the yard – organizes a ski trip to Plattekill Mountain in upstate New York, followed by an Aprés Ski Party. This year the after party involves a Mac n’ Cheese competition, live ski lounge music and free drinking for skiers from 8-10pm!
Over some delicious mulled wine, I chatted with bar owner and beer genius Dave Pollack about the three most important things in his life (this weekend) – skiing, beer, and mac n’ cheese.
This adventurous and cheesy day is happening this Saturday 1/25/14. Skiing is 6am-7pm. After party starts at 8pm. If you want to get in on this ski trip or enter your mac n’ cheese into the competition, email Dave dave (at) thediamondbrooklyn (dot) com. Continue reading →
We are so proud that the talented and amazing Greenpointers contributor responsible for the hilarious and adorable illustrations in her Friday column “Recipes Gone Wild” – is the champion of Enid’s Apple Pie Contest that happened this past Sunday!!! We asked her how it feels to win the most competitive Apple Pie contest in the universe:
GP: So, how many pies were you up against? Libby: Somewhere around 28-30.
GP: Did you think you had a chance at winning? Libby: I didn’t think I’d win because my pie looked like a lumpy, primitive life form in a world of civilized, beautiful pies. But I did have one special ingredient in my arsenal, which I was hoping would give me an edge. Continue reading →

I was honored to be asked to judge a Cupcake Bake-Off fundraiser for NAG a few weeks back and I actually delayed my vacation a day in order to attend. Cupcakes in mass quantity totally beat vacations. It’s instant brain happiness.
This is the second major “celebrity” judge opportunity I’ve had – the last one was the Halloween Dog Parade Costume Contest. I admit it’s starting to get to my head. The other judges were Ovenly’s head baker Hannah Duke, Carmen Rodriguez of Brooklyn Cupcake, and Councilmember Diana Reyna.
The Cupcake Bake-Off was held in The Brooklyn Kitchen’s awesome event space and as the contestants filed in with their goodies, I was drooling. The colors, shapes, sizes – cupcake overload! Continue reading →

♦ Art Event
For corn-lovers, Greenpoint was the center of the known universe this Sunday, as TBD Bar hosted the first ever Kings County Corn Bowl. This fiercely contested cook-off settled a question as old as time itself: “what are the weirdest, wildest, and mother-shucking tastiestthings you can make with corn?”
Brooklyn Star previewed the main event with incredible Chicken and Waffle-Cones, topped with a tangy corn-slaw and lathered in syrup.
Then came the main event. Twelve culinary kooks brought incredible offerings, all crafted from freshly picked upstate corn. The dapper Kendall Holmes of Cloud Coffee Carts wowed with his corn soda (stop by his weekend pop-up outside the Artists and Flea Market to try his incredible coffee soda). Art of Eating Inauthor Carney Erway twisted a staple Asian congee porridge – ditching the rice and creating a “Corngee”, topped with succulent roast duck. Another honorable mention goes Julie Tanous and Ted Rosen to the Corn “Gaznacho”: a corn gazpacho with parsley oil, whimsically entering the Corn Bowl in… an edible corn nacho bowl. Continue reading →
