Cocktails And The Beauty of Botanicals

My job is so hard.

My day has just gotten better, because I’m in a light-filled white suite on the top floor of the Wythe Hotel, and two long tables are filled with herbs in glass terrariums, unique spirits, decanters with citrus and ginger, and small bowls of red and pink salts. The room is composed of people adjacent to the food and beverage industry: food studies grad students at NYU, sommeliers, food writers, photographers, and chefs. We’re at the Food Book Fair, and we’re about to get our drink on in only the most elegant of ways. Continue reading

Food Book Fair Showcases the Best of Food in Print

Novelist Stephanie Danler’s favorite depiction of food in literature comes from the Seamus Heaney poem “Oysters,” which begins:

Our shells clacked on the plates.
My tongue was a filling estuary,
My palate hung with starlight:
As I tasted the salty Pleiades
Orion dipped his foot into the water.

Danler mentioned the poem in a panel discussion on food in literature titled “Food and Fiction,” one of the events at this year’s Food Book Fair, which was held at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg on May 1st and 2nd.

Danler, who wrote Sweetbitter, was joined on the panel by Jessica Tom, author of the novel Food Whore, and Helen Ellis, whose collection of humorous short stories American Housewife came out earlier this year. Cathy Erway, host of “Eat Your Words” on the Heritage Radio Network and author of The Food of Taiwan and The Art of Eating In, was the moderator.

The sensory richness of the Seamus Heaney poem that Danler cited—“my palate hung with starlight”—set a fitting tone for the Food Book Fair, which felt like a celebration of all that is beautiful in food writing and publishing. Continue reading

Tasty Reads: The Fourth Annual Food Book Fair is Happening this Weekend

foodieodicals_libbyvenderploeg_greenpoint Libby VanderPloeg’s ‘Recipes Gone Wild’ at last year’s Foodieodicals event

Foodie book lover? Bookish food lover? If this sounds like you then take note! The fourth annual Food Book Fair is taking place at Wythe Hotel this weekend and it’s probably right up your alley. The fabulous three day event is packed with literary events, panel discussions, delicious meals, and flavorful gatherings that the discerning foodie will not want to miss.

The weekend also plays host to the magnificent Foodieodicals festival, which shines a spotlight on some of the best independent food magazines from around the globe. The Saturday afternoon fair also puts a strong emphasis on local publications and includes stalls from Bakeri Zine, Edible Brooklyn, Diner Journal and Put a Egg on It. Tickets are only $5 and the amount of edible freebies we got at last year’s event more than covered the entrance price.

Food Book Fair runs Friday 10th-Sunday 12th April at the Wythe Hotel and you can see a complete schedule of events here. Tickets for specific events can be booked here.

We wanted to know: What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever eaten?

not safe for vegans

On behalf of Greenpointers Recipes Gone Wild, I spent last Saturday at the Food Book Fair Foodieodicals asking attendees to share with me the wildest thing they had ever eaten. Some of the answers were not too shocking, but most people’s wildest food stories were actually pretty incredible! I did a little photo documentation of the answers, which you can see on our facebook page, and I’ve kept anonymous the identities of those who participated (by way of some hand-painted animal masks, naturally). Special thanks to Rose D for helping me with the photography!

Foodieodicals– A Festival Where Food and Publishing Collide

Cara Livermore of Chickpea Magazine, a vegan quarterly, talks about her passion.

Combine food with literature, and what do you get?  Foodieodicals!

A festival within the three-day Food Book Fair, this event-within-an-event on Saturday (4/26) celebrated creative food publishing, featuring more than twenty inspiring culinary publications from across the globe.

Food Book Fair

Food Book Fair Starts Today @danieldelaneyThe Food Book Fair was this past weekend at the newly opened Wythe Hotel. When I think of fair I think of tractor pulls, farm animals, funnel cakes, and a lot of hoopla. I expected the Food Book Fair to be convention style, with tables, shwag, food samples, commotion. Instead there was a tiny and well curated “book store” in a nook in the hotel lobby, and talks and panel discussions were held in a beautiful ballroom. Food was for sale, and looked outstanding. And there were expensive dinners each evening. Hoopla came in the form of a pigeon sneaking into the event and making a raucous and flying up into the projector screen. The beast wrangler in me caught the scared bird and released it.
I want this sandwich but I already ate a sandwich! #lunch #food #rampsOver the weekend I attended 6 talks, which were well organized, very informative and hosted by leaders and innovators in the field of food, writing, cooking, publishing and technology. All were followed by book signings. I left with a wealth of knowledge and a brain full of inspiring ideas.
More public access, in the form of free events, and food samples is something I hope they improve upon for the next fair. Important info about the food industry as well as resources for hopeful food writers shouldn’t come at a price. That being said, I am sure a 3-day long event at the Wythe hotel was costly.

What follows is a brief summary of each talk I attended.
