Hook & Cleaver, a new ‘beefsteak club’ had its official opening last night at 68 Greenpoint Avenue.
The steakhouse-cum-lounge-bar fills the space formerly occupied by Coco which closed its doors in October, just 10 months after opening in January 2014.
Hook & Cleaver is headed up by Chef Diane DiMeo, famed for appearances on TV cooking shows such as ‘The Taste’ and ‘Chopped’. She is partnering up with Brooklyn Meat Club to bring diners top cuts of meat in what she describes as ‘your old typical steakhouse’, where choice cuts of meat will be brought around on trolleys for diners to select. Last Saturday saw swarms of hungry foodies pounding the pavements as the Bon Appétit Grub Crawl landed in Greenpoint. I’m not usually a huge fan of group tours but made an exception for this one because it involved so many amazing local bars and restaurants. And I’m mighty glad I did. The day was phenomenal, with such an incredible array of food and drink that it just went to confirm what most of us already know: Greenpoint is so hot right now!

In January, the space next door to Coco 66 reopened under Manhattan restaurateur Michael Callahan. The new restaurant, Coco (68 Greenpoint Ave), wowed us with a fresh and delicious dinner menu that included dishes such as Bourbon-Butter Grilled Oysters, a whopping great Double-Thick Pork Chop, and inventively prepared seasonal veg. The selection of late night bar food (served until 2am) also caught our eye with amazing Pickled Egg Sandwiches and $5 Cheeseburgers.
Now, nicely timed with the arrival of spring, they’ve started serving weekend brunch (10am-4pm), with a cracking menu devised by Head Chef Joe Capozzi (formerly of The Fat Radish) and consulting chef Julie Farias. Continue reading →
