Grand Street Restaurant Week (02/16-02/22)

RestaurantWk_postcard2015

Finding it hard to leave the house right now? Here’s an incentive to get you over the threshold of your icicle-encrusted front door…Grand Street is throwing its 2nd Annual Restaurant Week!

16 Grand Street restaurants between Union and Bushwick Avenues are offering hot deals on two-course lunches ($8-$10) and three-course dinners ($18-$30) all week, ending Sunday 22nd February. Okay, Grand Street’s not quite Greenpoint, but it’s probably just the right distance to give us that little bit of exercise we’ve been avoiding since before the dawn of the great freeze…and help us work up an appetite worthy of a three-course feast.

Check their website for details of participating restaurants and menu info.

Cachacos Unite! A Day in the Life of Cachaco The International Deli

cachaco_greenpoint_greenpointers_philippetheise
C is for Cachaco The International Deli, which opened at the corner of Huron Street and Manhattan Avenue in November 2013

Perched at the vibrant intersection of Huron Street and Manhattan Avenue, Cachaco The International Deli turns the purveying of food into a celebration of repartee and community.

It starts with the display case of Colombian breads, savory arepas, crispy buñuelos and unfried almojábanas, just inside the door. Farther into the deli, two rows of tin containers hold ingredients for falafel and tzat chipotle chicken sandwiches. A large blackboard hangs above, advertising these and other items in orange and green chalk.

Sure, people come to Cachaco for the food, which David Wanger, a nearby resident who came in for tacos on a recent Sunday afternoon, carefully described as good and cheap and fast. But it becomes clear that Wanger and others also visit Cachaco because of the people. Continue reading

New Outpost of Xi’an Famous Foods Provides One Less Reason to Ever Leave Greenpoint

Xi'an Famous Foods

We all know that living in New York affords us the ability to travel without leaving the city, and few destination neighborhoods offer as much variety as Flushing, Queens.  Even a short trip here is enough to realize how lazy a term ‘Chinatown’ is.  Many of the restaurateurs in that neighborhood have begun to capitalize on this, highlighting their regional identity and scoring great reviews in the New York Times while attracting more western eaters to endure the 7 train in exchange for a cheap, delicious meal.  Few have done so with the marketing skill of Xi’an Famous Foods, which has now gone one better and recently opened up shop on the corner of Bedford and Manhattan Avenues in Greenpoint, thus sparing us the pre-dinner commute to Queens. Greenpoint Cheap Eats Diaries Volume IV: Manhattan 3 Decker

Manhattan_3_Decker
Manhattan 3 Decker

“I feel like I’m in Pulp Fiction” says Gina as we meet for this week’s Cheap Eats adventure. This is because we have picked Greenpoint’s Manhattan 3 Decker (695 Manhattan Ave) to seek out our next budget meal. With its classic all-American interior of red leather booths and blind-shaded windows it would indeed be no surprise to hear the mockney tones of Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer plotting from the next table.
