Easy Like Sunday Morning Coconut Macaroons!

When a friend invites you to a party and you ask, “Can I bring anything?” be prepared for “How about dessert?” And if you don’t want to take the easiest route and go to the bakery, try this incredibly simple and festive macaroon recipe.

Aside from how tasty they are, there are two things I love about this recipe: 1. most of the ingredients (aside from coconuts) are in my cabinets and 2. I can easily remember all the ingredients. They also survived despite our wonky oven temperature fluctuations. Continue reading

Recipes Gone Wild: Morning Glory Muffins

The other day I got an alarming series of texts from my friend Camille. She had just baked a batch of muffins, cooled them, and set them on the countertop in ziploc bags while she stepped out to run some errands. Upon returning home, she entered her kitchen and glanced around. Something was wrong. Granola crumbs littered the floor. She heard a rustling, and surveyed the room. It was then that she locked eyes with her intruder— a fat squirrel, having entered through the open window, now huddled under the kitchen table, seemingly trying to calculate the probability of successfully dragging a Ziploc baggy full of muffins and a package of sprouted chia-goji berry granola out the window without being eaten/killed/captured and/or losing his loot.

Enid’s Apple Pie Contest Winner – Our Own Libby V!

We are so proud that the talented and amazing Greenpointers contributor responsible for the hilarious and adorable illustrations in her Friday column “Recipes Gone Wild” – is the champion of Enid’s Apple Pie Contest that happened this past Sunday!!! We asked her how it feels to win the most competitive Apple Pie contest in the universe:

GP: So, how many pies were you up against?
Libby: Somewhere around 28-30.

GP: Did you think you had a chance at winning?
Libby: I didn’t think I’d win because my pie looked like a lumpy, primitive life form in a world of civilized, beautiful pies. But I did have one special ingredient in my arsenal, which I was hoping would give me an edge. Continue reading

Recipes Gone Wild: Concord Grape Crumb Bars

A friend of mine and I were just discussing which of our senses we could live without. After a bit of thinking I had settled on smell— a decision directly related to living in a city where ambient smells are cheap, plentiful, confusing, and often punishing as summer wears on.  But it’s autumn now, thankfully, and the air is crisp (or it’s going to be soon? Next week? By Halloween?), and if I couldn’t smell I’d miss some of the best things about this season…leaf piles, wood stoves, hot apple cider, and fresh concord grapes!

Recipes Gone Wild: Tamarind-Curry Apple Chips

Stopping at a gas station upstate the other weekend, I had my first taste of this fall’s apple crop. A lady had set up a fruit stand just outside the food court, and there was no way I could pass up the little pint of slightly waxy Macouns she was selling. After months of resigning myself to the mealy leftovers of last year’s harvest, I couldn’t shut up about how much I was enjoying this freshly harvested apple– its bright, snappy crunch, it’s still-slightly-green astringency, it’s sweet-tart flavor. Continue reading
