Visions opened on Friday, June 27 at The Picture Show in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. “We were looking for myths, dreams, and hallucinations,” said Megan Clement, and ultimately, the selected “films…were dreamlike, or expressed aspects of the unconscious in an abstract way.” Peruvian artist Mariana Tschudi, who did extensive research on medicinal plants, such as Ayahuasca (also commonly called yagé), and their phenomenological effects debuted her most recent work, “Transcending Our Shadows.” Continue reading

The Forgotten Murals of Williamsburg

© Brooklyn Museum

I recently visited the Brooklyn Museum, where the forgotten Williamsburg Murals are on display in the building cafe. Jazz-like rhythms echoed through the hallway as I shared an intimate moment focusing on the details of each painting. The most interesting thing about them is their historical context.  They’ve been through a lot. Continue reading

Fitness Review: Jessie Zalla Pilates

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to become a healthier and stronger person, mainly to improve my bad posture, since I sit all day.

I decided to check out pilates, which is a great physical conditioning system to improve the body’s core and restore alignment in the spine and pelvis. Jessie Zalla, who has taught Pilates and Yoga for over 14 years, has a great local studio at 37 Greenpoint Ave. After taking her class, I left feeling taller and gained new knowledge of how to treat my persistent shoulder pain. The large studio windows provided a blissful view, as I worked on the strenuous, but satisfying exercises Jessie showed me.

The Back Room Consignment Shop

The Back Room Consignment Shop & Art Gallery

When I visited the Back Room Consignment Shop (832 Manhattan Ave), I spent an hour looking through the collection. Sally, the owner, was very kind and helpful, as was Darius, who selected some of the clothes to show me. It was a welcoming environment and I recommend this place to my friends because it had some rarities like a Betsey Johnson dress from her Paraphernelia days and other cool things.

We chatted with Sally, a former burlesque dancer and Greenpoint “native.”

That’s a BIG FISH! Brooklyn Fishing Derby 2013 Winner Announced!

While crossing over the East River during my daily ride on the East River Ferry, I would often see fishermen cast their lines into the dark polluted waters, hanging out on India Street Pier having a good time, in the rain or sunshine.  Some of them were members of Brooklyn Urban Anglers Association, whose fishing derby this year would end with an East River Fish Fry. Greenpointers Block Watch Program – Get Involved!

The Block Watch Program is being relaunched in Greenpoint, and if you would like to join the program here’s how:

Contact Police Officer Steve Truglio of the 94th Precinct at (718) 383 – 5298 and tell him that you would like to join the Block Watch Program.

The program covers a training course and assigns the volunteer a Block Watch ID number.

This is not a block watch in the literal sense, where you are obligated to walk around your block looking over your shoulder for a straight number of hours. Should you happen to see anything suspicious happening at the very moment you are leaving your house for work, or going on about your daily business, etc., there will be a number for you to call.

All your information is confidential should you wish to join, and the training will teach you how to properly handle a situation should you be there to witness it. It is encouraged to spread the word for home owners, business owners, renters, anyone who is worried about safety in Greenpoint, to get involved because as a community we can make Greenpoint safer.
