The Astral is undoubtedly one of Greenpoint’s most iconic edifices. So much so, it even inspired it’s own novel. It sure is a purdy old pile o’ bricks, straight out of Victorian London, and with a great history to boot. While you may not know the fascinating story of the Astral, you’ve likely been inside the building while brunching at Brooklyn Label, or maybe you have noticed its picturesque brickwork…

This was a truly awesome article.
Thanks, Pop! Glad you enjoyed it.
Great article. I recently stayed in this building and must say the apartment I was in was a teeny 1-bedroom — have they chopped up the units inside? In any case, though small, it was a pleasant enough little place. Definitely better than a tenement on Orchard Street. Now, if you are looking for subject matter, how about that big red former bank building on Franklin & Greenpoint — the Corn Bank I think it was?
According to the floor plans we have viewed, the units seem to be about the same as when built (besides adding in bathtubs, closing off doors, etc.). And yes, they are small but pleasant!
We have had our eye on that bank building on Franklin & Greenpoint, it’s a beauty!
I believe the Astral also housed the Greenpoint Settlement, an effort to aid the immigrants in the neighborhood. For a time this settlement was headed by Mary White Ovington, who later went on to help found the NAACP. Just a few more reasons for the building’s historic importance. For more on the settlement movement, Ovington, and a bit on the Greenpoint Settlement check our our new website povertyhistory.org.
Very interesting, Ethan!
I think my grandfather, Walter C. Heidelberger and his brother Peter, owned the Astral from about 1905 to 1945. Does anyone know the names of the owners at that time? I visited their office about 1939 and remember going into one of those arched doorways. I would like to go back to see it again if I were sure that it was the same place.
After his death, the business was successfully carried on by his three sons.

The Fashion Industry is totally focused on how people look and larger people do not figure on mainstream fashion’s radar.
Hi fantastic story. Do you know anything about the Incubators Apartments “The Inkies” on Norman Ave bet Moultrie St & Jewell Streets in Greenpoint ?
Don’t know anything about the “Inkies” but sounds like I need to do some research!
