Plans to set up a new business improvement district (BID) in Williamsburg have been in the works for a few years, and now they need the buy-in of local residents.
Several community stakeholders hope that a new Northside BID can provide additional resources to one of the city’s biggest commercial hubs.Â
BIDs are geographically distinct areas that partner with the city governmentto help shore up services such as sanitation and maintenance. BIDs are…

This is inflationary. It will drive up rents and taxes and worsen the affordability crisis.
It is not needed. Northside already has access to TWO chambers of commerce to promote their businesses.
How is it fair for a landlord of a single 2 – 8 family building to pay ANOTHER fee on top of what might be a 9% increase to property taxes in the future AND the ability of NOT to raise rents on stabilized apartments if Mayor Mamdani has his way? PS And if said landlord DOES sell his/her building, as someone elsewhere suggested, what happens next? They usually turn into the “affordable” condominiums, which is what has happened near me.

You know why corner trash bins are overflowing? Noy the cutsie “poop bags,” but take out waste from the nearby shops and restaurants, including street food vendors. And instead of providing more bins on the corners , sanitation has removed them. So why are we paying twice for services that our tax dollars should be paying for already? And why is this bid over a large block area, annd not only along commercial avenues , like betford? No other bid covers as much residential blocks as this proposed bid. So as it currently stands , many people might feel opposed to the current boundaries. Seems like a money grab with no guarantee of services which will force out. Residents and small businesses.
How about stores just sweep up the trash in front of their property in the morning and before they close. Voila.
The advertising for this Business Improvement District (BID) is so misleading. The non-profit group that is pushing for this BID is not telling you that residents within the BID area are going to have to pay via higher property taxes (on top of what Mamdani proposes if they need to raise property taxes) which will lead to higher rents and higher prices at all stores in order to pay for something you are already paying the city to do. Something like this only condones the city on not providing services that you pay for. Lincoln Restler, you were elected to protect the people and help keep costs lower, this BID proposal has no realistic upside except for costs. Do your job Restler ! If property owners and businesses are not doing their part then DSNY needs to step in and give out summonses.
