Good afternoon, Greenpointers
Hope everyone is staying cool as this heat wave threatens the big July 4th holiday this weekend (arguably already threatened by this country’s continued democratic backsliding, but we digress!)
Regardless of the state of things, it’s neighbors helping neighbors that truly makes this country great. And there have been plenty of examples of that this week.
A McCarren Park softball field was renamed after the late Ronnie Ortiz Jr. We profiled two great local businesses that could use your support—Kubuś Photo Service is in danger of closing. Chasing Tailor, run by a couple who recently lost their apartment in a fire, has been teaching the neighborhood the power of a well-fitted suit for more than 30 years.
A Greenpoint neighbor shared a classic American tale of resiliency and taking root in your community. Drunken Noodles depicts a college student spending their summer in Williamsburg.
Unfortunately, the Leonard Library in Williamsburg has to close again for another two-year renovation period (after just reopening last year). A massive fire in Greenpoint injured several firefighters.
It’s not quite “they paved paradise/and put up a parking lot,” but it’s in that vein.
Whatever your vibe is this week, there’s bound to be an activity on our list that appeals to you.
In and around North Brooklyn
The Landmarks Preservation Committee says a proposal to turn the Greenpoint Firehouse building into condos needs additional work.
The Greenpoint Film Festival returns in August.
