Shop owner and longtime Greenpoint resident Brittany Mahps has just opened her second vintage boutique on Nassau Avenue. You may recognize her first neighborhood vintage clothing shop Mahps (110A Nassau Ave), by the oh-so-tempting $5 sidewalk rack in front of the store. After five years in business at that location, she decided to expand her offering and open a home goods and children’s clothing shop on the “other” side of Nassau, closer to McGolrick Park. The front of Mahps Kids & Home (181 Nassau Ave) is stocked with well-curated vintage furniture and adorable home goods for both adults and kids, while the back half of the store houses gently used kids’ clothes (for ages baby to pre-teen).
Local parents are probably aware that there’s only one other shop in Greenpoint that stocks vintage kids clothing, Flying Squirrel (87 Oak Street). Brittany says that initially she was stocking kids clothes here and there at the original Mahps, and once parents (and kids) caught on, demand started to increase. Kids not only grow out of clothing but also tend to destroy them quickly—and we’re in a time now where vintage, recycled and upcycled fashions are tres chic. That, and who wants to spend $50 on a new pair of pants for their kid?
Brittany carefully selects her goods for both her shops from sources all over the country—she’s been known to pull over to the side of dirt roads in Anywhere, USA to hit up a yard sale. Other items come from estate sales, antique fairs, off the beaten path junk shops, or really anywhere she sniffs out the gems. With her unique eye for treasures, she’s also happy to source clothes or furniture for you, if you let her know what you’re on the lookout for.
Swing by Mahps Kids and Home, or her original Mahps location and say hello to her and her handsome dog Tucker.
