Our very own Greenpointers writer and local author Geoff Cobb is giving a free talk on some fascinating local history this Tuesday, February 28 at Gallery AWA (61 Greenpoint Ave. #306) from 6-8pm.
Via the event:
This talk will discuss the original function of some famous Greenpoint buildings, and show how these buildings have been repurposed through the years as the neighborhood has developed from grassland to industrial hub to creative quarter. Mr. Cobb will give an insight into the rich history of charitable structures such as the Astral Apartments on Manhattan Avenue, built in the 19th century by Charles Pratt as affordable housing for employees of Astral Oil Works, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This talk will delve into Greenpoint’s illustrious history as one of New York’s key industrial hubs, giving an insight into the hidden history of the neighborhood’s many factories and industrial buildings, including Faience Manufacturing Company on West Street, the award winning renovated Keramos Hall and the stately Eberhardt Pencil Factory which dominates Greenpoint Avenue and is now home to dozens of creative spaces including our own Gallery AWA.
