The prestigious Zagat Guide’s prizes for the city’s best eateries for 2017 have just been announced and one of the winners is a Greenpoint institution: Peter Pan Donut & Pastry shop (727 Manhattan Ave.) was named as the city’s premiere location for donuts. Peter Pan received a 4.5 for food, a 3.7 for decor and a 4.1 for service. The runner up, Orwasher’s Bakery, in the East 70’s in Manhattan got the same scores for food and service as Peter Pan, but scored lower on Decor. Peter Pan’s unique decor has not changed much in generations and the timeless quality to the place is one of its many attractions.
For those of us who are already aware of how good Peter Pan’s donuts are, the news is a confirmation of an open secret in Greenpoint. For two decades the place has fed Greenpoint and, unfortunately in my case, added weight to my torso. In 1993 Donna Siafakos and her husband Christos bought the donut shop and learned some of the previous owners secrets of making delicious donuts. They combined that knowledge with their own flair for baking and the place’s fame has continued to grow. The business is a family affair that also includes Donna’s sister and son. They have all worked hard in making Peter Pan the success that it is.
The 4.1 for service is also well deserved. A team of hard working Polish girls run their feet off trying to keep up with the shop’s huge lines that often stretch out the door. These hard working women truly earn their money and deserve the shout out for their efforts Zagat gave them.
