Who would have thought industrial Greenpoint could look so captivatingly elegant? Greenpoint-based artist Sven Johnson is an architectural illustrator and painter who has been living in the neighborhood since 1992. He’ll be showing his latest work, twelve watercolor paintings of Greenpoint at Oslo Coffee (133 Roebling Street) starting this Friday, March 16th.
There is something playful happening at Cafe Grumpy on 193 Meserole Avenue. It stops me when I’m looking for a seat in the recently renovated space—almost a dozen colorful and fun paintings made with brewed coffee, pen, ink, and watercolor line the walls in neat wooden frames. I want one, I think, and my best friend will want one, too. The barista confirms that he wants one as well, and so I look up the artist: Craig Peterson of Indiana, Pennsylvania. On a recent Friday night I visited two art shows that both opened on Greenpoint Ave. Both artists, Maj Anya DeBear and Roxanne Palmer mentioned that honesty was one driving force behind their recent artworks. While being true to oneself creatively in a hard to please art world is difficult to attain, the resulting satisfaction and confidence that came through made for two stand-out openings on either side of McGuinness Blvd. Continue reading
