Farewell, Halloween—time to finish off the candy corn before it goes stale, sweep up the cobwebs and deflate your giant spiders. If you or your neighbor still have a slowly decomposing jack-o-lantern or two sitting outside, by now they’re probably getting a little worse for wear (but hopefully not as bad as the Hawkins pumpkins in Stranger Things). If you don’t have a compost bin—the entire zone that makes up Community Board 1 should have one, though we’ve heard some residents or landlords have avoided using them—you can drop your pumpkin and its guts off at the McCarren Park Greenmarket on Saturday from 8am-2pm. Alternatively, if you’re into an old fashioned pumpkin smashing, you can head down to the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket for Pumpkin Smash 2017 from 9am-12pm on Sunday, November 5th. Do your part to help NYC become a Zero Waste city!
Town Square’s 9th Annual Pumpkin Day is this Saturday, October 1st at the Brooklyn Expo Center (in past years it was held at McCarren Park). Each year, hundreds of kids and parents come to pick pumpkins and have fun with Fall! There’s a pick-your-pumpkin patch, arts & crafts, face painting, concessions, activities presented by local businesses and organizations, and live music and dance performances.
Our recent report that Five Leaves is soon to be expanding was quickly met with delight by the likes of Eater and Gothamist, which goes to show just what a treasure we have on our hands here in Greenpoint.
One of the reasons Five Leaves (18 Bedford Ave.) is so loved is that it always feels inviting no matter what the season. Spring and summer means packed tables of attractive sun worshippers lining the pavements outside, but in colder months there’s nothing better that holing up inside for an evening of great food and delicious cocktails. Last Friday was one of those such nights and we took great delight in ducking out of the chill night air into a cozy candle-lit corner to try some new seasonal additions to the dinner menu. Puffer jackets at the ready…this week’s gonna be a chill one with temperatures rumored to be dropping down to the 30’s by midweek. Brrrrrr. Fortunately our favorite neighborhood Italian Adelina’s has added some excellent new dishes recently and they are exactly the kind of thing we want to be eating on a cold winter night, washed down with a nice glass of red from one of the many wine casks that line the walls of the restaurant.
Here’s what we tried and LOVED when we visited at the weekend: Continue reading
Halloween may be long over, but those little decorative pumpkins, the sugar pie variety, are still gracing the table tops and window sills of homes and shops around the neighborhood. You could send your leftover pumpkins to Teddy the talking porcupine, or you could throw them in your oven and transform them into something delicious. On a recent visit to Brouwerij Lane, after extolling my love of squash and shamelessly touting my cooking skills, I was granted 4 little pumpkins from their personal stash of decorative vegetation. I brought them home, set them on the couch and stared at them. Four pumpkins. They stared back. Four pumpkins. They weren’t talking. Tell me what to do with you. Silence. No clues. I decided I’d just roast them all and create something new and pumpkin-y each day.
Greenpoint’s freshest beer store, Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave), has a couple very exciting events happening beginning tonight and continuing this Saturday (10/26). Along with cold, crisp autumn days are freshly brewed wet hop harvest and pumpkin ales! All day Saturday, Oktober 26th, beginning at Noon, Brouwerij Lane will feature plenty of seasonally delicious beers, seasonal food and fun! There’s nothing better on a crisp autumn day than freshly brewed pumpkin ale, except when the ale is tapped from the cask and poured from an actual pumpkin!
And tonight Thursday 10/24) from 6-10pm, Brouwerij Lane will be ushering in a new era of modern French breweries with Pays Flamand. Brewer Mathieu Lesenne will be here to share with you his wonderful beers such as the hoppy blonde Anosteké as well as his collaboration with Norway’s Nøgne Ø titled Prototype Juniper Porter. Just to sweeten the deal we’ll be pouring the Nøgne collaboration with French Brewery Page 24 a Rubarb IPA as well as a keg of French Canadian brewery Trou Du Diable Dubai Pillée double IPA. To compliment your sipping, we’ll be accompanied by French jams from DJ Bocky. It’ll be a blast!

I’ll admit it. My spice cabinet is a bit of a mess. And it seems the more cooking I do, the greater into disarray my cache of seasonings falls. A six-year-old, nearly untouched jar of marjoram rests atop a pillow of unlabeled ziploc bags filled with heaping spoonfuls of unidentified yellow and green aromatic powders. Towards the back of the cupboard, a tub of oregano the size of a house cat mocks me. Too much of this, too little of that, and what to do with it all, assuming the old stuff still has pungency? Greenpoint’s Tara Suan, has come up with an idea to combat these common kitchen conundrums.
