Oriana Leckert’s ‘Brooklyn Spaces’ Will Show You Where The Fun Is

There are many Brooklyns. There’s the Brooklyn you get when you walk the streets of Williamsburg with a map in your hands. There’s the Brooklyn down by the Smith Street bars. The Brooklyn along the Promenade. The Brooklyn at the McKibbin lofts. The Brooklyn that is Little Russia by the Sea. The Brooklyn on 9th Street. Anyone who comes here for a day or for a lifetime has their own Brooklyn—their own café, bar, park, deli, and party that they insist you must try. “The best,” they claim, “in Brooklyn.”

“But, how can they be so sure?” you wonder. “Have they tried all the other places?” Cultural hipstorian and author Oriana Leckert has—or it seems like it in her new book, Brooklyn Spaces: 50 Hubs of Culture and Creativity, which dips into boat clubs, biology labs, supply stores, art galleries, raves, and collectives of all kinds across the borough. Brooklyn Spaces…the Book!

We have a big shout out today for our Events Editor (she does the lovely What’s Happening posts weekly) and all around super woman, Oriana Leckert, who announced yesterday that her own blog, Brooklyn Spaces, will become a BOOK. That’s right, a real object that you can hold in your hands with fancy turny-things called PAGES.

Brooklyn Spaces: 50 Outrageous Hubs of Culture & Creativity will be published by Monacelli Press in Spring 2015, and Oriana be writing it this summer. Like her blog, it will be a collection of all the most brilliant, bizarre, and beautiful places Brooklyn has to offer. Continue reading

Animus Art Salon Sunday 9/23

Our great friend Oriana from Brooklyn Spaces is making a presentation about her project this Sunday September 23rd, 2012 from 7-11pm at Animus Art Salon. Other presenters include: Bryn Larson of Oxheart, Laura Bluher, Irons Grishina, Murjani Holmes, ND’A, Bailey Catherine Dorothea Nolan presents BabySkinGlove, Linden Renz of Mad Sharpe Productions, with a performance by Finnegan.

There will also be: The Tube Party
On a recent family trip to Göteborg, Ventiko went bonkers for tubes and brought some back for us all to try! Come and sample all the delicious flavors—including Reindeer!
