Weekend Music Picks: Back to Basics

Frankie Cosmos performs a benefit for the BARC animal shelter this Sunday

Greta Kline and Mac McCaughan revive the best qualities of the early-1980’s nascent New Wave movement, with Kline starting from a folk foundation and McCaughan working in post-punk. They are both playing locally this weekend and are worth catching live.

McCaughan plays Saturday as the headliner in a three-act lineup that starts at 8 pm at Baby’s All Right (146 Broadway). Kline’s band, Frankie Cosmos, plays a benefit for our beloved Williamsburg BARC animal shelter as the last of three acts that start at 6 pm on Sunday at Brooklyn Bow Wow (1581 DeKalb Ave.). Lisacat is a contact of mine on Flickr that I always check out. I love her beautiful photos of even more beautiful cats and dogs that are usually available for adoption at the BARC Shelter.

Tonight I came across this picture of Molly and her story.

Molly was trapped in Canarsie, Brooklyn where she lived with a colony of true wild cats and a couple of friendly cats. The ferals were returned to the colony after being spayed or neutered and we’re finding homes for the “friendlies”. Bide-A-Wee, and City Critters have taken in some of our adoptables, but Molly tested positive for feline leukemia. As she is older and not showing any symptoms, we’re hoping to place her in a home with other positive cats or with an experienced cat person. She’s a playful sweetie and deserves a chance at a real home.

Come on, someone please take care of her and give her a nice home?

McCarren Heights

Bowling for BARC last night with The Heathers was a blast. We drank, we bowled, we saw Bernadette Peters and Jim Carroll.

Also met a woman who schooled me on the neighborhood of McCarren Heights. Apparently the little old ladies who lived on Lorimer between Meeker and Frost dubbed it so. How much you wanna bet they’re parents of real estate agents?

The Gutter is awesome. We’ve decided to start our own bowling posse and go once every couple of weeks. Maybe with some practice I can break 75.

I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow! I will be gone for ten days, not sure how much blogging I will do, possibly none. Won’t ya’ll miss me?
