Stuart Cinema & Cafe (79 West St.) is saying goodbye to the neighborhood, but luckily, they’re not going too far.

The movie theater announced a relocation from their West Street home to a new space in Long Island City.

“Our new location will feature two auditoriums, upgraded luxury theater seating, bigger screens, and a full restaurant with an expanded menu,” owner and founder Emelyn Stuart wrote in an email.

“We’re creating an even more elevated, immersive, and celebration-worthy moviegoing experience.”

They are hosting a closing celebration this Saturday, March 7, from 12 to 8 pm, “featuring free food, drinks, giveaways, and more as we honor the community that supported us for eight amazing years.”

The new Long Island City location will open on April 3.

Just a few months ago, Stuart Cinema & Cafe completed an expansion of its Greenpoint location, adding an additional auditorium.

The Stuart team did not share a reason for the move, but recent news on West Street could have impacted its ability to stay in that space. The block’s landlord, Pearl Realty, served tenants with sudden lease terminations last fall, prompting a mass exodus as a new developer plans to turn the lot into a residential building.

Now that the neighboring 67 West building looks primed for a sale, it perhaps was only a matter of time before Stuart needed to find a new home.

  1. Should leave everything packed in boxes because you’ll be moving again real soon anyway.
