El Vez moved his Christmas show to San Diego.
This year there were also no quirky holiday theme shows from Ronnie Spector and alt-cabaret icon Tammy Faye Starlite. WTF?
Don’t close your eyes, though, to other talent within walking distance this weekend.
Tonight there’s Americana, rock, and alt-folk music at Knitting Factory Brooklyn. Mike O’Malley and the Beastie Band play along with A Valley Song and Joshua Garcia. It’s an all-ages show that starts at 8 PM with a $10 admission.
Here are Joshua’s folk tracks, rock from the Valley crew and a video from O’Malley.
The Tender Trap up on Greenpoint Ave. has always scared me a little with its sex dungeon atmosphere.
Unlike the Britney Spears video character, I am actually that innocent.
I go into that place and I’m like a lamb in the lion’s den.
But live hip-hop is still a rarity in Greenpoint, and Tender Trap runs a good series on Friday nights.
Bub Styles, Arxu, Buddha Gold and O!Mi perform this Friday, along with some DJ’s. Everything starts at 10 PM and there’s no cover charge.
According to Bub Styles’ Soundcloud page, he is also known as Bubba Spiffy and is part of the Villain Clique.
Friday you can also catch live timba music at Cubana Social starting at 9 PM. Cubana was supposed to close last week but the owners said what the hell let’s have one last blow-out.
Opening nights for restaurants and clubs get all the attention but trust me you always want to go to the closings instead.
Simple reason, really: Everyone attending is charged with the somber responsibility of finishing up all the liquor.
