In North Brooklyn we’re lucky to be surrounded with artistry—we have dozens of gallery spaces, hundreds of working artists, and street art on practically every corner. So if you live here and you’ve got kids, nurturing their creative side in this neighborhood should be a no-brainer. Of course summertime is a great time to do it, when they’re out of school and need to keep their busy minds and hands occupied. And lucky for neighborhood parents, there’s a truly unique opportunity to send the kids to Tumbleweeds Art Camp right here in Greenpoint.
Every day at Tumbleweeds art camp kids will work on a structured art project as well as have free art time to draw, paint, weave, etc. At the end of each day there’s a meet and share, where everyone discusses their artwork as well as other art from around the world. There will be outdoor snack time and (weather permitting) playtime at McCarren Park, with lunchtime in the afternoon. Painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, fiber art and recycled art are just a few examples of the fun projects the kids will be getting their hands on.
Each week of camp a different theme will be explored—such as artists and their styles, early decades of art, art for fun as well as different artistic theories and techniques. And, there’ll be weekly art outings to local galleries! How grown up and cool. The camps will guide the children to experience many areas of art, allowing them to gain an all around appreciation of the many possibilities of the art world as well as improve their technical skills and knowledge of art and its history.
Led by local art instructor, abstract painter and crafter Hayley Youngs, this is a unique and enriching experience where children will think creatively, set goals, and successfully see the fruits of their artistic labors come to life. Hayley has been running private art groups and one-on-one art lessons for children and teens in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area of Brooklyn as well as Manhattan for the past four years. She holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and her art has been included in group shows and benefits at the Sears-Peyton Gallery, Fischbach Gallery, and A.I.R. Gallery in NYC. She’s passionate about early childhood arts education and has taught at many NYC children’s art programs.
Over four individual weeks this July, children will gain an all around appreciation of the many possibilities of the art world, an understanding of its history, and the technical skills to create their own work.
