Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. I wanted to share a few songs and upcoming shows you should check out.
Let’s start with Hey Anna, one of my favorite bands with Greenpoint roots. Though they are local, the band put out an EP in Japan for their recent song “Dance Until Three.” Fortunately, This Time Records made the previously exclusive track “Tangerine Lightning” available on Soundcloud. As a group that includes three sisters, one of Hey Anna’s strengths is their incredible harmonies. They are on display here, as well as their music’s infectious blend of energy and elegance.
If you are looking for some shows to check out tonight, I have two ideas. The members of Animal Years call Brooklyn – including Williamsburg and Bushwick specifically – home and if their rousing latest song “Let Go Of Your Head,” from Sun Will Rise is any indication, they should be quite good live. Find out at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 at 10:30 PM.
Also, Wild Belle will be doing a DJ set at new spot Randolph Brooklyn (104 South 4th Street & Bedford) starting at 9:30.
There’s a pretty exciting show Friday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg. French Horn Rebellion and Savoir Adore will be co-headlining. FHR is great live and I’ve heard a lot of good things about Savoir Adore. It’ll be just the party to end the week. And to commemorate the occasion, the two bands have joined forces to release a song together called “The Fire.” Listen to that here: https://soundcloud.com/french-horn-rebellion/french-horn-rebellion-savoir-1
On Saturday 12/7, Bushwick’s Lilly Wolf will play a release show for their This Painted Life EP at Secret Loft in East Williamsburg. It’s part of the Hip-Hop Christmas Pageant – more information on that here. To get a little preview of this group’s highly danceable (and ever so slightly dark) pop, click here.
One last thing, there is an interesting music-related Kickstarter campaign underway. It’s for a Brooklyn-based non-profit called Play It Forward. The idea is a music school that will offer donation-based lessons to beginners and the underprivileged, starting next summer. Pretty cool, right? Contributions will help cover the cost of the space, instruments, and teachers. Learn more here. The campaign ends next Thursday 12/12.
