Waiting for the right time to launch a dream career as a restauranteur? The Yard is offering a series of 4 workshops, beginning October 30th, that offers expert wisdom on opening a restaurant, cafe, or bar in today’s economic landscape.

The curriculum was designed by Holly Howard, a local business consultant who helps entrepreneurs turn their passion into profit. Each workshop will focus on a different aspect of the restaurant industry.

Session 1 (10/30) will introduce Business Planning & Finance, providing an overview of existing restaurant business plans and the resources available for starting your own. Erica Dorn of Accion USA, a microfinance organization that offers business training and financial literacy, will host.

Session II  (11/6) is all about Sourcing a Menu and Creating a Customer Experience. Host, Carolyn Bane of Pies ‘n’ Thighs, will share her expertise on sourcing local, organic foods and drafting seasonal and speciality menus. Given the success of her restaurant, we’d say she has some genius advice up her sleeve (if you’ve seen her mouth-watering menu, you know what we’re talking about… i.e. whimsical illustrations, fried chicken, and bourbon pecan pie).

Session III covers Operations & Management, which includes staffing and training employees, creating systems and day-to-day operations, and strategies on leadership and management.

Session IV  (11/20) gets to the heart of Marketing & Public Relations and is hosted by the expert responsible for marketing at The Meatball Shop, Andy Rosenberg, who has succeeded in packing the house at the Bedford Avenue and LES establishments, even in the wee hours of the morning.  The workshop will cover the process of identifying your ideal customer and developing your brand message, giving restaurant-creators the tools to get the word out and the customers in.

Tickets are on sale now and space is limited. The full program is $260, but our friends at the Yard are offering an early bird special of $205 if you sign up by the end of today (10/10)!

Select seats are also available for individual sessions at $70 each. Get tickets here and let us know when that restaurant is open for business. We’re sure it’ll be bustling.
