ryan here. i am one of the volunteers who is helping recruit more volunteers to help at the Taste of Williamsburg event on May 16th. basically, we are entering into a big push to get volunteers from the community to help with publicity, ticket-sales, and to volunteer on the day of the event.

A $2MM capital campaign is under way after a competitive city wide Request for Proposal process, Neighbor’s Allied for Good Growth (NAG) and the People’s Firehouse, Inc. (PFI) were awarded the rights to re-develop the former Engine 212 Co., more famously known as “the People’s Firehouse” located in the Northside section of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
The redesigned building will become the Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center and will provide; a permanent home for NAG and PFI, affordable office and meeting space for the community, a ground floor exhibition space for local cultural and arts organizations, and commemorate Engine Co. 212 and the activism in our community.We need your help to raise the funds and awareness that will make this vision a reality. Join us at the first annual Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint, a block party style benefit, scheduled for Sunday, May 16th on N. 11th St. in and outside of Brooklyn Brewery.

Williamsburg Walks is also back this year and Teddy’s is hosting a brainstorming session with the community next Wednesday 4/21 for the 2010 edition. This year it’s been condensed from 6 weekends to just one – Saturday 6/26 & Sunday 6/27.
Williamsburg Walks, an event on a car-free Bedford Avenue intended to make attendees rethink their public space and to offer a space to celebrate the neighborhood, will organize an open planning meeting to solicit ideas from the community about how to make the event fun, memorable, and fulfilling.
Williamsburg Walks is inviting local residents, merchants, and organizations to help plan activities that serve the double purpose of offering recreation opportunities while also supporting the civic spirit of the event. At the session, the organizers will update the attendees on our latest progress planning the event and conduct a brainstorming session about the kind of programming the community would like to see on their street. The session will take place on Wednesday April 21st from 6 to 8 pm at Teddy’s Bar & Grill, 96 Berry Street (corner of N8th Street) in Williamsburg.
Williamsburg Walks is an event organized by Neighbors Allied for Good Growth and the L Magazine with the support of Project for the Public Spaces. The 2010 edition will happen on Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27. This new format is in response to the opinions expressed by groups of local merchants and residents and come from a desire of the organizers to find an inclusive and sustainable model for the years to come.
Says organizer Gregor Nemitz-Ziadie, “This is an event by the community for the community at which we want people to go ‘woaa, I did not know you could do that on the street’. We want create a place where you can relax or shop and think all the while”
