The Greenpointers inbox overflows with things to do in the neighborhood every weekend, so with thanks to my co-workers Jamie & Johana for helping me come up with this uber-cool title, I’m starting the weekly “Weekend Blend”. Things to do in GPT & BBurg. While occassionally I might mention some out of the immediate area things, for the most part it will remain ultra-local because well, the name of the blog is Greenpointers. So here’s your first batch for this weekend. And as always, feel free to email me your suggestions at greenpointers [at] gmail [dot] com.

Some of you will have a three day weekend with Columbus Day on Monday, most of you will not. Poor Columbus used to be such a major holiday kinda dude and now he’s been relegated to a floating holiday, at best. Probably due to that whole scandal about him not really discovering America and all.

For the kiddies & families it’s Pumpkin Day in McCarren Park by the Red Field House b/w Lorimer/Bedford/Driggs this Saturday from 11am-1pm. You can come and pick out your own pumpkin, decorate it & take it home. Other arts & crafts & live music too. There’s a $5 suggested donation and the rain date is is Saturday, October 17th. A Town Square Event.

While not in Greenpoint, this Saturday is the long anticipated Brooklyn Skillshare at Gowanus Studio. The day will consist of 5 blocks of 90-minute classes, with 3 classes taking place per block. Learn fun and useful things like screenprinting, how to turn bottles into glasses and vases, reusuable bag making, massage basics and much more. Plus there’s a closing party at the end of the day sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery. Admission is a suggested donation of $10. Participants can attend as many or as few classes as they like, but are encouraged to make a day of learning. There is no need to sign-up, just come on the day of the Skillshare—it’s first-come, first-served. Facebook event here. Fan Brooklyn Skillshare here.

The Habitat’s Oktoberfest is set for this Saturday Oct 10th. I planned on going but now I’m heading out of town, so I am mourning the fact that I will miss out on the pretzels. Yes, I am obsessed with them. Facebook event here. Fan The Habitat here.

Also this Saturday Diamond Bar is having their Roth-toberfest from 2-6pm. What exactly IS Roth-toberfest you may ask? Well it’s the combo of David Lee Roth’s b-day & and Oktoberfest celebration. Here’s the deets:

– 3 unique wooden barrels of festbier straight from Germany served in the yard
– Wear a long blond wig and get your first beer for free
– $5 sausage & spaetzle plates brought to you by the fabulous Bob Pickett
– DJ’s Herr Mark, Frau Mary, and Diamond David Lee Pollack spin your favorite German Tunes & Van Halen

Saturday is also host to the First Annual Williamsburg Open.

With the tournament fully sold out, you can drop by the courts Saturday night from 8 to 10 pm. The party is open to everyone. There’ll be a bar set up (21+) and a great DJ playing, so it should be a lot of fun. But fun aside, the key is getting people out to buy beer and wine, because 100% of that money will go towards reconstruction of the courts. The bigger the party, the more drinks get sold, the more money gets raised, and the quicker the courts get resurfaced.

After 10 pm rolls around, we’ll shut the party down on the courts and move it to Berry Park, which is right across from the courts on Berry St. The owners of Berry Park have been very supportive of our efforts, and also are offering a $1 discount on Radeberger for anyone with a McCarren wristband.
