I’m personally not much of a do-gooder but this is something I can definitely get behind. I really think theses folks do great work. So if you happen to be able to bake delicious goodies (and maybe do some bad things) you can be a part of something bigger (and probably better) than yourself.

Hi. Big fan of the blog, read it religiously. Thought I would give you a heads up on our Dessert Corps project in the hopes that you would give us a shout out. We have about 37 regular volunteers in the neighborhood right now but we need to grow the number with new recruits if we are gonna make this project sustainable over the long term.

We here at Craig’s Kitchen, a direct action community group that works to support soup kitchens in the Greenpoint & Williamsburg neighborhood. Back in January, we launched a new project in support of the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen – a dessert donation group. Every week volunteers from throughout the community help provide dessert for the weekly Wednesday diner. We like to call these fabulous volunteer bakers “the Dessert Corps”. The Dessert Corps mission is to plug into the volunteer spirit of our neighborhood, organizing homemade desserts for the diners of the soup kitchen. (Lots more specific info, mission statement, etc on official Craigs Kitchen blog; www.craigskitchen.wordpress.com)

How it works: For every week, there is a specific dessert theme. You can always check out the plan for the upcoming few weeks on the main Dessert Corps blog page. At the bottom of the page, there is a list of dates, dessert themes, and # of volunteers needed (in order to fulfill the weekly goal of 10 volunteers providing a dessert that serves 10). There are several drop off locations, days, and times; Tuesday evenings in Williamsburg or Greenpoint, Wednesday days in Greenpoint (exact addresses provided in the email), and at the soup kitchen church after 4pm. It helps if the desserts arrive by around 6pmish because typically, dessert starts getting served around 6:20-6:30pm.

How you plug in: When you determine that you can bake a dessert, email craigskitchen [at] gmail [dot] com with the date(s) you want to bake. We will mark you down in the schedule and the weekend prior to your committed dessert week, you will receive an email with several recipe suggestions (just in case you don’t already have a fave). Some volunteers have been baking weekly, some monthly, and some plan to plug in whenever their schedule and budget permits. Its pretty mellow and casual and we hope you will join us in the fun.

There is a list of upcoming desserts on this post, Volunteer Dessert Calendar…the next month of sweet treats. We are still looking for people 7 people to back Pumpkin Cheesecake Swirl Brownies for this Wednesday’s meal.

thanks.
