It’s now a new year, but the changes in the neighborhood continued during the holiday season with the closure of both a Greenpoint pizzeria and a longtime neighborhood shop in Williamsburg, along a few business openings.
Greenpoint appears to be down one spectacular pizza spot as the Paul Giamatti approved Ria Bella (1049 Manhattan Ave.), which opened in 2014, has been closed since early December.
The Sicilian style pies were reason enough to venture to the northernmost stretch of Manhattan Avenue, and concerned customers have contacted Greenpointers asking if the business is reopening as no official closing announcement was made. We reached out to the owners and are waiting to hear back, but Ria Bella’s Yelp page lists the business as closed.
Over in Williamsburg, Fuego 718 Store (249 Grand St.), a neighborhood shop with colorful handmade goods from Mexico and around the world opened in 2004 and closed last week after 16 years of business.

Over the past decade, luxury development has proliferated around East River State Park, but dive bar prices can now be found on the corner of N. 8th Street and Kent Avenue at Dolly’s Swing and Dive (101 Kent Ave.), the newest Williamsburg watering hole complete with a jukebox and a throwback vibe to the 1930s – 1970s.
To complement the reasonably-priced drinks, the menu features pub classics like house-baked pretzels and smaller bites like vegetarian taquitos. Winter hours (Nov. 1st – April 1st) are Mon. – Fri. from 3 p.m. – 4 a.m., and Sat. – Sun. from 12 p.m. – 4 a.m.
Just a quick walk up Kent Avenue to the corner of Grand Street, Two Hands (262 Kent Ave.), also celebrated its grand opening last week. The Australian-inspired restaurant has a clean, Instagram-friendly aesthetic likely to draw a brunch crowd seeking out avocado toast and açaí bowls.
In the northernmost part of Greenpoint, pizza options are a little thin (pun not intended), but now Ria Bella (1049 Manhattan Ave) is slicing up their tasty pies for single serving folks. Their pizzas are ceramic oven-baked, with either a thin or traditional Sicilian crust. And all of them are delicious combination of soft and crispy, and made with authentic family recipes. You can taste the care and love that goes into every pie, and now you can taste it with by the slice too. Perfect for a Saint Vitus (1120 Manhattan Ave) pre-show nosh. Whether you know it or not, the meatball plays an iconic role in history — especially kid history. Perhaps you were obsessed with “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” when you were a kid. Or maybe the other camp kids couldn’t get you to stop singing “On Top of Spaghetti,” the song about the sad fate of the once-delicious meatball that was sneezed upon and rolled off the table, turning into mush. Do we really need another pizza place in Greenpoint? Well, probably not, but Ria Bella (1049 Manhattan Avenue) is pretty good and I am more than happy to add it to my rotation of options.
The pizzas are baked in a ceramic oven, with either a thin or traditional Sicilian crust. Some of the pizzas are pretty creative – one that they especially recommend is the Sfincione – a square pie that has tomato basil sauce, sautéed onions, anchovies, caciocavallo cheese, topped with roasted bread crumbs (Bread crumbs on pizza? Who loves pizza in Greenpoint? Well good news – Ria Bella, a new pizzeria just opened at 1049 Manhattan Ave (between Freeman St and Eagle St). But Ria Bella is not just any other slice spot – it specializes in hard to find Sicilian specialties (think square pies), plus they offer some great deals for lunch and game days.
For a girl with roots in Sicily, just a look at Ria Bella’s menu has me drooling. The Caponata, a dish I grew up on, is a sweet and sour eggplant spread that should be served in a bottomless dish in my opinion.
Sicilians are masters at serving multiple types of carbs in one dish (this is a good thing) – like Ria Bella’s Potato & Eggs Pie (pictured). Getting a pizza crust perfectly crisp while cooking an egg on top is not an easy task and thus a hard to find topping – but not in Greenpoint anymore.
Let’s talk Sfincione, not an easy to pronounce but a very easy to eat pizza that has anchovies, bread crumbs and caciocavallo cheese on top. This was a treat my Grandma (aka Nonna) made in a square pan growing up and I cannot wait to sink my teeth into it again.
You will have to go in and try the rest of the menu, which has vegetarian friendly options as well.
