For all of you who felt so left out when Citi Bike didn’t include your beloved Greenpoint in its initial bike share launch, they will be expanding soon to a block near you. Come find out all about it tonight (1/13) at Community Board 1’s “Learn About Citi Bike” event at Swinging 60’s Senior Center (211 Ainslie St) at 6:30pm.
NYCDOT will present and NYC Bike Share staff will be on hand to answer questions about Citi Bike’s expansion in Brooklyn’s Community Board 1.

Greenpointers, get your helmets ready. The bicycle share company, Citi Bike, is doubling in size and Greenpoint is one of the first places on the list to receive the new bikes.
6,000 bikes will be added at 375 new locations by 2017. The expansion will begin in 2015 with station installations happening in northern Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Long Island City, and Bedford-Stuyvesant. 1,000 new bikes are expected to be in service next year.
While popular, Citi Bike hasn’t been without it’s share of problems since it’s inception in May 2013. The initial rollout was delayed a year because of software issues and damage to bikes after Hurricane Sandy. There have also been complaints of broken docks and kiosks as well as cracked seats. A lawsuit has even been filed about the bike designs. But none of this stopped 100,000 people from signing up for the ride-share program and riding 14.7 million miles in it’s first year.
Since its launch, Citi Bike has, aside from some software glitches, been an incredible addition to urban transit in NYC, with rising ridership throughout the initial months (in October, the bike-share company reported a record high of 42,000 trips per day). But lately, the interwebs have been abuzz with headlines like: “Blue Bikes Red Ink,” seemingly out of nowhere. Even Brian Lehrer was like “Wait, What?”.
Now I know what you’re thinking, bike haters. Bikers are the reason EVERYTHING in the world is horrible, including making traffic worse, gentrifying neighborhoods, and basically ruining all of New York. The city would be better off without more bike riders anyway, blah blah blah. Continue reading →
DOT is teaming up with Alta Bicycle Share to introduce a 24/7, 365 days bike share program that will include areas in North Brooklyn. Its aimed to launch Summer 2012. You can “Suggest a Station,” depending on how close (or how far) you want it to be. An obvious and convenient choice for Greenpoint is the Indian St. ferry terminal. The program is best for quick rides. Its privately funded through membership fees, not taxpayer dollars. The bike are sturdy and built for safety but helmets are not included though strongly encouraged. Here is a listing of upcoming bike share demonstrations in Brooklyn.
