A 2011 Women & Wikimedia survey found that only 9% of Wikipedia’s editors identify themselves as female. And in fact, this word cloud from the survey shows in graphic detail how women have been treated on the platform through name calling (bitch, cunt, hysterical, witch and prostitute are among them). Last year, Art+Feminism, Kickstarter, along with other partners and local neighbors banded together to help close the gender gap on one of the world’s largest public reference websites. At 2017’s event, 35 editors and added over 20,300 words across 58 articles.
This weekend at Kickstarter HQ in Greenpoint (58 Kent Street), organizers are calling for your help to add even more art and feminist information to the site. “People of all gender identities and expressions are welcome to participate, and we especially encourage women, transgender, gender nonconfirming, and nonbinary individuals to take part.”
Art + Feminism Wikipedia Editathon events are happening globally throughout the month of March. To learn more, check out their site.
