Looks like another great beach weekend is ahead for us. Here are some obvious concert picks: Jason Isbell tonight in Prospect Park, and Nicki Minaj Sunday night at the Barclay’s Center. During the day let’s just meet on the deck of this boat
Reality check, I’m almost out of cash. So here are some local afternoon shows for those of you who are also stuck staying in town this weekend, or who just can’t get your s**t together to arrange transport to the shore.
The Gigawatts festival is taking over Meserole St. in Bushwick with The Wick, The Well, and Our Wicked Lady all hosting bands. Doors open at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
It’s a good way to catch local acts, along with some out-of-town headliners, all in one place. Single-day tickets are $35 and you can bounce among the venues. The Culture Files has a useful list of when each band goes on stage, and a playlist of recommended acts, here.
Meanwhile, closer to home, Union Pool in East Williamsburg has their usual Summer Thunder free lineup starting at 2 pm on Saturday. The venue has a nice outdoor courtyard with a taco stand.
Kid Congo and the Pink Monkeybirds will be playing glam space rock, Degreaser has psychopathic rock, and the Art Gray Noizz Quintet features noise rock. Those are all essentially the same music genre, but the bands get mad when you say that.
Opening the shows is DJ Pan Que Ques, who has no online presence or streams but his name is awesome and that counts for a lot in our book.
Here‘s a Google Map showing all the venues.
