Asking me for recommendations for local live music while the Grateful Dead + Trey Anastasio are playing is about as advisable as tapping killer Richard Matt on the shoulder during a midnight balling.
But here are some fine shows you can catch after showing off your beer gut (guys) and ssssizlin’ mid-thigh tattoos (advantage: ladies) at the beach this weekend.
Friday
Las Cafeteras, Good Room, 7 pm
Pounding Afro-Mexican rhythms. Who never thought of that before? And it kicks ass.
Wilder Maker, Baby’s All Right, 10 pm
Yeah, by the way I also look equally hot singing amazing folky harmonies on picturesque bohemian overlooks in LA. Just in case you’re looking.
Saturday

Joe Bataan, Union Pool, 2 pm
Good chance of rain during this show people, if you are worried about missing the beach. And if storms don’t follow, this venue has a nice patio space outside the stage area for you to soak in some sun. Bataan is the king of 70s Palladium-era salsa.
Sunday
Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate), Shea Stadium, 7 pm

Weekend’s over. A bad time for deep listening or happy jingles. Just get pissed I say. (Both in the anger sense, and the alcohol sense). Here’s the perfect accompaniment.
