Williamsburg Walks 2010

Williamsburg Walks is back next weekend the 26th & 27th. The absolute BEST venue for people watching. It’s like a hipster parade! Grab a giant brew to go from Turkey’s Nest and walk in the middle of the street without getting hit by a car.

On Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27, Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg between N 4th and N 9th Sts will be closed to traffic and filled with local artists, craftsmen, performers, community organizations, sidewalk cafés and music from 1 to 7 pm.

Neighbors Allied for Good Growth, the L Magazine and Project for the Public Spaces with the support of the New York City Department of Transportation Weekend Walks Program are teaming up to bring you two days of good old fashioned sustainable fun and a chance to “rethink your public space”. There will be perfume mixing, pickle preserving demos, kids activities, walking tours, 12 public art installations, brewery tours, and a giant picnic in the middle of the street.

Food:
– A giant picnic in the middle of the street. Blankets will be available for attendees to lie in the sun and Bedford delicious takeout menus.
– Picnic cooking competition that will reflect the great history and culinary fusion of our neighborhood.

Events for Kids:
– An entire block will be turned into an “island” with different sections with themes such as the sea, the beach, and the jungle. Kids can spend the afternoon doing crafts, enjoying performances and playing with water or in our jungle gym.

Skillsharing:
– Locals will share their knowledge in perfume mixing; paper making; DIY window farming or terrarium building; ice cream demos; preserving pickles demos; walk up bike repair; DIY crafting; DIY tote bags making and silkscreening; outdoor yoga; and how to make Adirondack chair with salvaged wood.

Public Art Installation on the topic of “rethink your public space”:
– 12 public art installations will provoke event attendee to rethink their relation to the the public space that surround them.
– Event attendees will vote for their favorite piece and the winner will receive a $1000 prize

Music:
– Impromptu acts by bands playing in the evening at the Northside Music Festival.

Walking tours:
Two tours focused on the history of brewing in the neighborhood; a gallery tour and a street art tour; a tour on the recent history and the current real estate boom; a tour focused on the experiences of residents and neighborhood history involving voice recording and podcasts.
