Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be invited to the opening night of the Ringling Bros Boom-A-Ring Circus in Coney Island and I have to say, it was pretty freaking awesome.
I, myself, was a circus virgin. That’s right, I’d never been to the circus before in my life. The Boom-A-Ring was exactly what I imagined. A big tent, animals, acrobats, clowns and death defying acts. It was just like in the movies!
My personal favorite parts were the daredevil motorcyclists in the sphere cage and the beautiful white tigers. But I throughly enjoyed the acrobats and the elephants, too.
It was such a fun time, taking the F train out to Coney, stopping by Nathan’s for a hot dog, seeing the circus, eating cotton candy (My stomach wasn’t thrilled with me that night) and walking the boardwalk back. Tickets start at $10 and I have to say it is something everyone should catch this Summer. It runs through September 7th and it’s a perfect thing to do with your girlfriends, kids or even a date. This is the first time that the circus has come to Coney Island and I hope that this becomes one of the regular stops on the Ringling Bros tours. From one of my friends who saw the circus at MSG – she said it was a MUCH better experience under the tent. So there.

Here’s some great photos of the circus from Flickr member maya haddad.
Also of note, this Saturday is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade which I checked out last year and had a great time. The weather doesn’t look like it’s gonna be great but those Coey Islanders know how party so I’m sure rain or shine the parade will be amazing.
Ah, I'd missed the opening because of a plane delay from St. Louis. Are you attending parade again this year?
