If you’re 16-year-old New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde (real name: Ella Yelich-O’Connor), you’re having the best week ever.

After playing two sold-out shows at Webster Hall Monday and Tuesday Lorde hopped across the East River to Greenpoint last night where she introduced her refreshing take on pop music (“where pierogies meet punk”) at Warsaw.

©ev__an

Lorde’s first album “Pure Heroine” was released Tuesday. She celebrated the occasion by making her US television debut that night courtesy of Jimmy Fallon. The next day she booted Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry from the top spots on the Billboard Top 100, claiming #1.

She is the youngest solo artist to achieve this since 1987 – nine years before she was even born. Equally as impressive, she’s been sitting at the top of the Alternative Songs chart for seven weeks, marking the longest reign by a lead female, trumping none other than Alanis Morisette’s whose “You Oughta Know” lasted five weeks.

It’s all thanks to her single “Royals” in which she pokes fun at all the silly stuff most other artists are singing about on the radio today. In the hit she sings, “Let me be your ruler/You can call me queen bee/And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule/Let me live that fantasy.” Doesn’t sound like it’s much of a fantasy right now.

At 9pm last night a line snaked around Warsaw, swooping along Driggs and down Eckford. No one in line looked Lorde’s age aside from the two guys behind me who were blatantly drooling over her.

The venue was packed inside, an impressive feat considering the size of the place. Lorde meandered on stage around 10pm, her hair a mass of curls and probably full of secrets about how she looks so effortlessly cool. Draped in a black cloak with a smirk on her face, she delivered the majority of her current catalog of songs from the new album and “The Love Club” EP released last May.

©mattfleischmann

The setting was dark. Lorde moved around the stage like a silhouette with just her face peering out from the cloak and that hair lit up by bright strobe lights matching every beat. It gave the effect that she was putting a spell on us. She looked and sounded like a witchy hip-hop soul teen queen.

Lorde’s “Pure Heroine” is receiving positive press all around with much acclaim for her lyrics and voice. Throughout the show she had no trouble displaying that natural talent, singing with conviction and emitting a confidence making it easy to forget her ripe age.

One of the most memorable moments of the night arrived near the end of the set when she busted out a partial cover of Kanye West’s “Hold My Liquor.” The crowd loved it because she nailed it. Even Kanye would admit it was cool. Lorde closed with “A World Alone,” the final track from “Pure Heroine” and no encore despite the crowd begging for more. It was a quick set, not even an hour long. But that’s all we needed. Just a taste. Lorde cast her spell on that Greenpoint crowd and it’s safe to say we’ll continue cheering for her while she continues her royal reign.

His fifth time to the NYC area since then and first since dropping his prickly verse on Big Sean’s “Control” where among other things, claimed himself ‘King of New York’, Kendrick worked his way from either side of the stage insistent on keeping the crowd moving. His black cap emblazoned with white “NY” lettering came across as an olive branch of sorts before asserting it as a crown after stopping the show midway to take a shot at New York peer Meek Mill over his new single, Levels – “There’s one n***a in particular that needs to realize that there’s ‘levels’ to this s**t,” Kendrick barked, “I’m motherf***in’ King Kendrick.”

The rest of the show was more playful. Kendrick was flanked a full backing band that goosed his already potent songs with even more urgency. Tracks like Backseat Freestyle, taken out of their parent album’s meta conceptual context in the live setting, sounded less like songs about a young kid boasting and more like the real thing.

Even favorites were reworked in their live setting, last year’s catchy, “The Recipe” was treated with a dubbed out double time coda that lurched along with menace. The crowd understandably responded generously to Kendrick’s amicable toasting to New York while admitting he never wants to let them down. Well that night, he certainly didn’t.

Fellow Greenpoint resident, Colin Ruel, went on tour with The Lemonheads this July, visiting us here at the Knitting Factory on 7/24 after Springsteen’s hometown, Asbury Park, NJ. His album came out through Junko Records on 7/19. I suppose The Lemonheads felt you’d like Colin Ruel if you like them. You might also like him if you like Elliot Smith, Wilco, Smog and for Ruel’s occasional falsetto and melodic quality, The Beach Boys. Take a listen and a watch: he edited this found-footage cartoon music video for my favorite song of his.

Until now Colin Ruel was a solo act; almost not an act at all, as he had put music on hold to focus on painting, recently quitting his job to freelance as an artist full time.

Having back-burnered his rock n’ roll dreams, the call from The Lemonheads came when he least expected it. They asked him to come on tour, and said he needed a band.

He called on his friends Will Roan (keys, formerly of Amazing Baby), Johnny Thompson (drums) and Tony Contflone (bass). They rehearsed for a couple weeks in their hometown, home-island rather, Martha’s vineyard.

Colin moved to Martha’s Vineyard from Connecticut in his tender freshman-year of high school and skipped class to play his guitar. He’d invite me to join him in the music room to jam on my flute. I’d find him there playing Blind Melon’s No Rain over and over. I did not jam. However, I did enjoy it then, and I’m still enjoying it now.

I’ve heard of Silent Drape Runners before, but until Jon and I just finished the entire Twin Peaks series (on Netflix) I didn’t know what it was referring to.

It’s supposed to be an amazing show tonight at The Bell House in Gowanus, so let’s leave it at that. I specifically am not reading the stellar reviews. I want it all to be a big surprise, like how Twin Peaks ended. If you haven’t spent two weeks of your life watching the entire series of Twin Peaks, do that – I promise that it will be time worth spent. I will let you know how it goes tonight.

If you are as intrigued as I am then buy some tickets and meet me there!

Despite their New-York-centric pun of a name, rock duo Jamaican Queens actually hail from Detroit. And on the very night their hometown filed for bankruptcy, the band’s equipment seemed destined for similar failure: time stretched on as they pleaded with the crowd for patience, a drum machine too high, vocals too low. But finally, when everything was in place, frontman Ryan Spencer electrified the crowd with his commanding vocals and an extensive musical arsenal behind him— what could best be described as an electronic-hip-hop-rock fusion— producing catchy, dance-ready glam-pop hits. Jamaican Queens has been on the road for the greater part of this year behind their new album, Wormfood, which was deeemed “The Coolest Debut Album of 2013″ by The L Magazine. Ryan Spencer and Adam Pressley, formerly of the band Prussia, teamed up to record last winter. The fusion of Ryan’s melodies and Adam’s knowledge of underground music and production has given way to their “odd pop” sound, influenced by the southern rap beats of Three 6 Mafia, Gucci Mane, and Young Jeezy, as well as the experimentation of Brian Eno and Lee Scratch Perry.

At 285 Kent on Thursday night, the bands’ mastery of multiple instruments was evident, as well as an ability to lead a crowd to pandemonium through live performance. The only complaint was that, because of early technical failures, their set was cut short. The band finished their set at 285 Kent with “Water,” the first track off their album. Other hits include “Kids Get Away” and “Caitlin.”
