There are plans to convert the old Chopin Theatre at 910 Manhattan Avenue into a full-service gym! The existing Starbucks will remain on the ground floor where you can stock up on calories to burn off in the 13,700 square foot health club. While no pool is planned, there will be a full range of equipment, classrooms, locker rooms and sauna & steam rooms. At last night’s CB1 public hearing, a representative for the building owner stated that they have plans to develop and independently operate the gym with a capacity for roughly 250 people. The proposed operating hours are 5AM-12AM on weekdays and 8AM-9PM on weekends, which some neighborhood residents felt allowed the gym to be open too late. Perhaps most importantly, the building owner has plans to keep the majestic eagle perched on top of the building!

So, Greenpointers, is a gym the right use of space for the old theatre? What kind of classes would you take at the gym?

  1. Those are actually the same hours the Greenpoint YMCA stays open, and Otom stays open until midnight on the weekends.

Any details if the building’s owner is in the fitness industry or will the space be leased by someone who is?

  2. Based on the comments last night at the CB1 hearing, the building owner does not have health club experience, but would like to independently operate the gym by hiring experienced managers.

  3. YESSSS! I dont care if it’s independently operated. I’m sick of spending alot of cashola and having to go out of the ‘hood to go to the gym. (Let’s be honest, I dont actually do that, I just waste money on a membership)

  4. WHAT they do with it, I hope they make it nice… BUT: it’s great to see that the old bldg is still being used. I’m in CT now (I’m the one who made the ciabatta bread for your giveaway that time, Jen, if you remember!) and I used to go to the Chopin for movies as a teenager. And when my son was little and we still lived in Greenpoint, this was a Roy Rogers. 🙂
I hope it’s ok that I put your photo of it on Pinterest! If you mind, please let me know and I will remove. I have it under my NYC board. 🙂
    Best,
    Gloria
