UGH Work Stress– Ask a Therapist!

Sorry, but this terrible stock photo was too amazing not to use.

Q: Dear Daniel,

What is the best way to deal with work stress?

A: Dealing with work stress can feel totally overwhelming and all encompassing at its worse. First off, it’s critical to be mindful that your work or your career are a component of your life, albeit an important one….you are not your work and your work should not define you. Of course this is easier said than done. I encourage you to take a step back and define the stress you are experiencing rather than having it all jumbled up as “work stress” or “I hate my job.” Often enough, it is your relationship to your job or relationships at your job that feel the most overwhelming and burdensome. Ask a Therapist: First Edition

The older I get, the more I realize one universal truth: we all have issues.  And while some of us are lucky enough to work them out through therapy, others never get the chance, for reasons ranging from the stigma surrounding mental health in America to the high cost of counseling (without insurance, therapy can range anywhere from $150-$300 per session).

But, don’t get too bummed out because starting now, Daniel Selling, founder of Williamsburg Therapy Group, is here to answer all of your deepest, darkest, and most profound life questions.

So, ask away Greenpoint!  Dump your problems here and Daniel will drop some words of wisdom that are sure to lay those winter blues to rest.

“Put away your phones and devices and have real experiences. Be with people.” – Daniel Selling of Williamsburg Therapy Group

Daniel Selling / Director Williamsburg Therapy Group

While sitting on a surprisingly comfy modern sofa inside a patient suite at Williamsburg Therapy Group, I enjoyed a tranquil view of a quiet stretch of Grand St obscured by tropical plants in neatly arranged terra cotta pots. I noticed stacks of books on the window sill with titles that referred to the psychology of African American families, Racial Oppression and the US Prison System – not the population of patients I imagined served by this practice. Cotton Candy Brain: Wall Street Coach Invades Greenpoint (and my brain)

As I sat on my couch staring at my navy blue wall, I began my career coaching session with Kim Ann Curtin, who is known as The Wall Street Coach. We didn’t meet in person because an early March blizzard kept us home, and that was a good thing.

I had sat in the same position and stared at the same blue wall the day before, when I felt what Kim would help me comes to terms with: my cotton candy brain.

Kim, a Greenpointer, is the Wall Street Coach because back in 2008 during the financial meltdown, she sat on a bench outside of the stock exchange with a homemade sign and offered free coaching, or as CNN put it an “emotional bailout,” to anyone who passed by.

Like all Greenpoint connections, it’s the great community here that brought Kim and I together. While kicking my ass, trainer and friend Dishan of Human@Ease heard me complaining about how I want to quit my job and work on Greenpointers full-time (even though I already do) – so she put me in touch with Kim.

The timing was right. I really had been yearning for some advice and direction and thought many times about seeking the expertise of a career coach. Continue reading
