We’ve all been there, working away for hours, focused on only the task at hand – maybe staring at a computer screen as we write, maybe it’s hours bent over jewelry wire, or time spent standing in front of a canvas. And then we look up and realize it’s 4PM and all we’ve eaten all day was that bagel with our morning coffee. That we’ve been in the same position for hours.
Friends, this is no way for a creative entrepreneur to live!
Whether you freelance, working from home or coffee shops for multiple clients, or are starting your own business, like so many of the members of Work It Brooklyn, you’re spending a lot of time focused on the business you’re trying to grow. But how much time are you spending focused on yourself?
Our next event, April 18th from 7 to 9PM and graciously hosted by our friends at Human At Ease in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, is centered on how to stay healthy and well while you are focused on growing your business, and the best way to make all the parts of your life balance while you are doing this.
We’ll have a discussion, led by our own Aja Marsh, of North Brooklyn Runners, and with panelists includingDishan Elise, a certified personal trainer and the founder/owner of Human At Ease, and Kim Ann Curtin, a life coach who is founder and CEO of The Wall Street Coach.
Whether you’re working on starting your own business, freelancing from the cramped confines of your studio apartment, or a member of our community with a focus on food, health and wellness, this event will provide answers to achieving a better, healthier, life balance.
Don’t worry – we’ll also have our signature speed-networking!

Brooklyn is a highly creative and crafty hub for many gals and guys. New businesses are constantly opening. Sew Moni is no exception! This super cute new shop has everything you need for supplies, ideas and crafting lessons of the sewing persuasion. Sew Moni’s Monica Briones (owner and founder) and Katie Mann (managing partner) know what it takes for business to meet creativity. I was able to visit the shop, and Monica provided me with a wealth of information as to what this new hot spot is all about.
This is one woman’s journey with small-space gardening in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Here is an appropriately corny picture of me with some flowers.
So let me start off with some back-story: Last year my boyfriend and I moved from one apartment on Eckford, to another apartment directly across the street. We upgraded from a small ground level two-bedroom (that we shared with a roommate), to a modern monstrosity with floor to ceiling windows and the tiniest bit of outdoor space. The first thing I did that spring was set up a garden on our balcony.
By garden I mean, I bought some pots, threw some seeds in the dirt, and waited. Occasionally I would go to Sprout and buy a new plant and mix it in with rest and wait to see what happened. By the end of the summer our balcony looked like a wilted graveyard and I had one sad sweet potato that sort of resembled a swollen thumb. I was envious of all the Brooklyn/Urban/Small Space Gardeners who had buckets of squash and full heirloom tomatoes to cook dinner with. We still had to go out and buy produce at Key Foods when we needed it.
At the end of the season all I knew was that, next year I will be doing it RIGHT.
So I present to you: The Garden Spot. This is a weekly column where I will share the ups and downs of gardening in a small space, specifically in Greenpoint. I will buy all my supplies at local stores, stay abreast of local farming/gardening news, create and share recipes from my garden and the local farmers markets, and generally provide information for all you gardening newbies out there. Like I said, I failed miserably last year, so I make no claims that this year will be any more fruitful. However, sharing it with you will hopefully prove fun and informative for all of us.
When I am at Indian restaurants I have this problem of licking chutney out of the bowl if I run out of things to smother it all over. I am obsessed. So is Drake from DP Chutney Collective, who is enabling my addiction with a Chutney Class at Good Yoga on 3/14. More info here.
Drake, who lives and runs DP Chutney Collective in Greenpoint, took some time to have a chutney chat with Greenpointers and share a delicious recipe.
Got skills? Want skills? Greenpointers is presenting an ongoing series of classes and workshops, taught by Greenpointers for Greenpointers. If you want skills, attend a class. If you have skills, let’s talk about how we can set-up a class for you to teach and make some cash. You can teach anything! How to make beer? How to start a website? How to speak Cantonese? How to pinstripe your hot rod? ANYTHING! As long as it is fun and informative…
For our first class we are going green! Our first Terrarium Class with Claire will be on Sunday March 4, 2012 from 5-7pm. It includes all materials and a free beer! Claire Typaldos is an amazingly talented floral designer, as well as an amazing artist, and we are going to have a lot of fun learning how to make a terrarium. At the end of class you will take home a gorgeous terrarium all for $40! I am personally hoping this will be the solution to my plant problem at home, since my cat murders all my plants.
To rsvp email greenpointers (at) gmail.com with “Terrarium Class” in the subject line. Limit 15 students per class.
