When we came up with nothing, we created our own dream subway line. And we’re calling it the K Train.
As you can see (above), Eastern Greenpoint and Maspeth would see immediate transportation benefits, and the ramifications could positively impact many more commuters. Expansion of the line could finally provide direct rail service to La Guardia Airport. The K Line could also serve areas like the Brookyln Navy Yard, Wallabout, and Red Hook, while also connecting neighborhoods that currently require a trip into Manhattan, allowing commuters to coast down the Brooklyn waterfront, something that as of now, we can only do to a very limited extent, by ferry. We know eastern Greenpoint is readying for construction of a new Kosciuszko Bridge, replacing the decrepitly old (and ugly) monster of a structure that currently connects Brooklyn and Queens (and that this will require a collective holding of everyone’s breath). We also know that our State’s forward-thinking Department of Transportation is removing surrounding trees to prevent an endangered bat species from nesting (so that they’ll settle elsewhere and won’t be harmed as construction begins).
Still, we can’t help but look at the new, treeless scene and wonder if the area, already bleak, has now reached its apotheosis of soulless, post-apocalyptic gloom. Continue reading →

Miami, Brooklyn is coming to Greenpoint. And it aint’ perty.
Did you know we are lacking in community here? In his recent State of The City 2013 address, Mike Bloomberg announced plans for “creating a ‘new community’ in Brooklyn – Greenpoint Landing – with more than 5,000 new homes, parks and open space, a marina, a public school and shops.”
5000 new homes! At two people per household, 10,000 people means a population increase of about 25% in Greenpoint. Is that sustainable?
I see a whole lotta big buildings. Where is the open space?
Back in November Curbed reported the first “NIMBY” protest against, “Park Tower Group’s proposal for 10 residential towers on 22 acres of the Greenpoint waterfront. The megaproject will include 4,000 apartments in 30-to-40-story buildings, a new East River marina, a seasonal putting green/ice skating rink, and a pedestrian bridge designed by architect Santiago Calatrava.”
How will this impact businesses, mass transit, infrastructure, open spaces and the character of the neighborhood?
And more importantly what hipster is responsible for this?

Fellow Greenpointer Nathaniel Ziering tipped me off that Kickstarter is moving their headquarters from Manhattan to Greenpoint! The fast growing company provides crowd-sourced funding for creative projects, many of which have come from Greenpoint. In March, plans were approved for Kickstarter to renovate 58 Kent Street, a Landmarked, vacant building located between Franking & West streets. As you can see from the picture, this one could really use a tune-up! Kickstarter’s move to Greenpoint is a big vote of confidence for the neighborhood, will be great for the local economy and continue the momentum of businesses choosing Brooklyn as their new home.
