Libby VanderPloeg’s ‘Recipes Gone Wild’ at last year’s Foodieodicals event
Foodie book lover? Bookish food lover? If this sounds like you then take note! The fourth annual Food Book Fair is taking place at Wythe Hotel this weekend and it’s probably right up your alley. The fabulous three day event is packed with literary events, panel discussions, delicious meals, and flavorful gatherings that the discerning foodie will not want to miss.
The weekend also plays host to the magnificent Foodieodicalsfestival, which shines a spotlight on some of the best independent food magazines from around the globe. The Saturday afternoon fair also puts a strong emphasis on local publications and includes stalls from Bakeri Zine, Edible Brooklyn, Diner Journal and Put a Egg on It. Tickets are only $5 and the amount of edible freebies we got at last year’s event more than covered the entrance price.
On behalf of Greenpointers Recipes Gone Wild, I spent last Saturday at the Food Book Fair Foodieodicals asking attendees to share with me the wildest thing they had ever eaten. Some of the answers were not too shocking, but most people’s wildest food stories were actually pretty incredible! I did a little photo documentation of the answers, which you can see on our facebook page, and I’ve kept anonymous the identities of those who participated (by way of some hand-painted animal masks, naturally). A festival within the three-day Food Book Fair, this event-within-an-event on Saturday (4/26) celebrated creative food publishing, featuring more than twenty inspiring culinary publications from across the globe.
About the Fair
The Third Annual Food Book Fair, running from April 25-27, brings together food enthusiasts, chefs, artists, writers, designers and publishers to celebrate the intersection between food culture and food systems. It is the brainchild of Elizabeth Thacker Jones. This year’s three-day fair spans a pop-up bookstore with more than 200 books, 20-plus food magazines, 60 visionaries, panel discussions, a film screening, pop-up brew pub and pop-up farm, an entrepreneurial resource clinic, and a second annual Pitch Competition.

The Food Book Fair was this past weekend at the newly opened Wythe Hotel. When I think of fair I think of tractor pulls, farm animals, funnel cakes, and a lot of hoopla. I expected the Food Book Fair to be convention style, with tables, shwag, food samples, commotion. Instead there was a tiny and well curated “book store” in a nook in the hotel lobby, and talks and panel discussions were held in a beautiful ballroom. Food was for sale, and looked outstanding. And there were expensive dinners each evening. Hoopla came in the form of a pigeon sneaking into the event and making a raucous and flying up into the projector screen. The beast wrangler in me caught the scared bird and released it. Over the weekend I attended 6 talks, which were well organized, very informative and hosted by leaders and innovators in the field of food, writing, cooking, publishing and technology. All were followed by book signings. I left with a wealth of knowledge and a brain full of inspiring ideas.
More public access, in the form of free events, and food samples is something I hope they improve upon for the next fair. Important info about the food industry as well as resources for hopeful food writers shouldn’t come at a price. That being said, I am sure a 3-day long event at the Wythe hotel was costly.
