Oh, the life of a bodega cat – no shortage of mice to chase around or cardboard boxes to lounge in, lots of friendly neighbors to stop by and scratch you on the head and, of course, freedom to do as you please in or outdoors – including having lots of cute, furry babies!
While of course everyone loves a sweet, fluffy pile of kittens, we probably can all agree that spaying and neutering efforts are necessary, for our furry friends’ own sake. Happily, the Assembly has just passed a bill this June that will help fund an effort to curb New York City’s homeless animal population. Continue reading →
Some of the best posters I find are scotch taped to in bodegas. This one is a call for feral cat colony feeders in Greenpoint. If you want to pitch in email Victoria vbondart (at) hotmail.com or Matt cutler9 (at) gmail.com. Continue reading →
(sponsored) The winter from hell is finally over, and for many New Yorkers, the travel fantasies that got us through the snow-pocalypse are about to come true. But where do our pets fit into our summer vacation plans? Brooklyn Waggers can provide an answer. Continue reading →
You know why we all get along as Greenpointers? Because when we put our human problems aside – we all LOVE animals – no matter how tight their jeans are or how much they pay for a latte. If they hail from Kansas or Ohio or were born and raised “native” Greenpointers – we can’t help but accept and tolerate them for all their quirks and differences.
This Saturday at 8pm, Pine Box Rock Shop (12 Grattan St) is hosting a fundraiser for The Neighborhood Vet – Dr. Natara L. Loose, who is soon to open a veterinary clinic in Bushwick. There will be lots of puppy love, great music and a silent art auction with works by infamous Greenpoint artists (& animal lovers) Francis Christie (tfuk) & Paul Richard, plus many many more items.
One particular item I am going to bid on is a 2′ x 3′ Custom Drip Pet Portrait by Paul Richard of my Chiwiener “D”! See you there!
Today from 1-4pm, ASPCA is hosting this event for pets in need of homes at the House of Vans (25 Franklin St).
Spring is officially here and what could be better than a puppy/kitten party to celebrate your re-birth into the outdoor world. Even if you can’t adopt it’ll be worth it just to hang out with (I’ll say it again) PUPPIES AND KITTENS.
There will also be food from Yeah Dawg and Calexico, drinks, a photo booth, and face painting. And if you are looking to adopt, ASPCA will be there to answer all your questions.
Not sure if you’ve noticed but cats are everywhere! Big cats, little cats – they are the new spirit animal of this here Brooklyn life. It’s because they are the coolest – even cooler than hipsters. It’s nothing new; Ancient Egyptians sweat the shit out of cats, too.
Maybe we idolize them because we know if they had a choice they wouldn’t participate in our fur ball schemes. Did you see this? 500 Years ago cats were depicted wearing futuristic jetpacks in old drawings. I know my cat would NOT like a jetpack, or a tiara.
Another glorious cat events around town worthy of your attention (even though your cat would definitely be like, “no thanks loser – I’d rather stay home and puke on your computer cables “) – is Brooklyn Craft Company’s “Cat Lady Craft Night” on 4/5.
We chatted with Brett Bara of Bk Craft Co. about why cats are just too cool for school and everything else. Continue reading →

Forget about your own Halloween costume this year – tricking out your pet is so much more fun! And don’t worry – the whimpering and awkward limping really means they love it. When it comes to Pet Halloween Costume Contests – winning is all that matters!
Bring your four-legged friends this Saturday and Sunday to LIC Flea & Food for an early Halloween.
With just two weeks to go, LIC Flea is hosting a pet costume contest this weekend. Visitors will be able to bring their four-legged furry friends to participate in the first pet costume Halloween contest.
If you don’t have a costume for your pet, LIC Flea vendor Spoil My Bitch mobile pet boutique will have a selection of costumes for small to big dogs you can purchase. Options include a fantasy dragon, duck, sailor, basketball player, sailor and even a cow.
Kiki Pet Photography will be taking photos of all the participants and a winner will be awarded prizes including LIC Flea & Food Bucks, a gift card to Ricky’s, a free 20-day potty break package from LIC Dogwalk, a free dog consult from Pooch Pals, a free office exam from City Vet and a discounted photo session with Kiki Pet Photography.
Visitors will also be able to donate clean dog items and unopened food and treats to “Rock & Rawhide” for dogs in need. Those people looking for a furry friend to call their own will also have the chance to adopt a pet through the pet adoption agency Zani’s Furry Friends, which will be at LIC Flea.
Besides pets, LIC Flea & Food has over 70 vendors selling everything from furniture, antiques, art, fashion, jewelry and amazing food vendors. Plus pick up a pumpkin at the LIC Flea Pumpkin Patch bringing pumpkins of all shapes and sizes direct from the farm. Don’t miss out because LIC Flea & Food is only open outdoors for two more weekends!
