North Brooklyn offers a cozy mecca of studio spaces for artists to work, live in, and Instagram. While the app has earned a reputation for promoting endless boredom check-ins and vanity selfies – plenty of artists are taking advantage of the platform to promote events and shows, document their work in various stages, and link with other like-minded creatives.
I scoured the ‘gram to find my top 8 pick of talented painters in the neighborhood with impressive archives, all for your viewing pleasure. Continue reading →
Perhaps you’ve met one of the awesome bartenders, John F. Moore, Jr, from The Habitat. If you haven’t, then I just feel bad for you. Bushwick Open Studios went down over the weekend and it was quite a blur. Highlights included live street painting, a traveling life-size music box, a sweaty full house at Slideluck Bushwick… and yes, kiddie pool performance art. ALSO homoerotic paintings involving wooden children’s toys, a dancing bearded man in a dress, and life lessons about face tattoos. It looks like there was also a bin of water bottles that people could sit in…unless they were just hanging out in a dumpster. AND last but not least, my personal heaven, A GIANT MACAROON SCULPTURE. Is there anything more Bushwickian?
Enjoy the visual feast below, curated from the finest gallery in all the land: Instagram #BOS. Art selfies included (and encouraged).

Bushwick Open Studios was an amazing success. While the giant newspaper map was unhelpful in terms of navigating the huge area, especially via bicycle (the preferred method of travel for art loving hipsters), we still managed to find our way by focusing on the studios of friends and wondering the streets. When someone suggested we check out the map, I felt like I would have a seizure. “Just put that away!” We did cover a lot of ground in a short time and I humbly bow down to the organizers, who took on a beast and slayed it.
