Fortunately, owner and health coach Dy from Human@Ease has a program that guides people through the process of getting fit, focused and committed; as a result, it’s a lot less intimidating… and it works! Having ginger hair, I’ve always felt a connection to other redheads. It’s like the bond you feel when you discover someone else shares the same slightly obscure hobby to you, except that with hair color you don’t even have to engage in conversation to know that you have something rare in common. This is why beaming at each other in the street is frequent practice among gingers.
When Franklin Street first started to become a shopping destination, one of the first people I met there was Jade Elzien, who was then working at one of Greenpoint’s earliest boutiques, Dalaga. Her upbeat attitude, warmth and genuine personality helped me feel comfortable and excited for what the neighborhood had in store. So it was very exciting to find out that she was opening her OWN boutique, Violet Pepper (688 Manhattan Ave.) last summer.
To celebrate the shop’s first year, Violet Pepper‘s hosting a big celebration with sales Friday July 25-Sunday 27th. Everything will be 20% off and sale items an extra 20% off. On Saturday the 26th there will be an added bonus of Brooklyn Brewery beers!
A little more about Jade and her journey from friendly Greenpoint neighbor to independent Greenpoint business owner after the jump! Continue reading →

We’re going to share with you how fun and easy it is to change the look of something you already own without the hassle of sanding and priming. We’ll be using one of our favorite product lines that we offer in the shop, Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan. By the time you do all that prep-work with traditional latex paint, you’re ready to call it quits and leave yet another unfinished project sitting around your apartment taking up precious, expensive square footage. When you use Chalk Paint® for your painting projects, you get instant gratification that keeps you going till it’s back in place ready for a photo op! Continue reading →

As most of you have probably noticed Greenpoint’s population is rising faster than new condos. As each year goes by, I find it harder to cross the street. What was once relatively quiet area with stray dogs running around, is now a small city in its own right. I decided to measure the local transportation boom by counting the number of bicycles that rode passed me in an hour’s time and I was pretty surprised by the answer.
Last week, we asked YOU, dear readers, for your guesses and here were the results: there was a total of 44 guesses, ranging from 42 bikes to 1002 (and one special guy guessed $1). Continue reading →
