If Elvis had a favorite Greenpoint bar it would be Goldie’s (195 Nassau Ave.). Tufted leather booths, opulent touches and a dark interior lit by candlelight before sunset, the bar is reminiscent of a 1960’s Vegas lounge. Portraits of Sammy Davis Jr. and Dolly Parton adorn charcoal walls in gold framed paintings imported from Tijuana. In a space that once occupied long standing Cafe Royal turned Cafe Edna, the black and white tiled floors remain, the owners faced the challenge of a layout that’s bisected by a residential staircase. The intrusion creates two separate spaces, creating a pool room near the front window, comfy booths along the entrance and standing room to casually lean into a nifty drink ledge along a wall. In the center of it all is a golden horseshoe bar that’s as enticing as Lady Luck.

A departure from their unassuming bar on Manhattan Ave., Lake Street Bar owners teamed up with Allsorts, Inc. Custom Fabrication’s Arthur Gandy and Michael Petersen to bring their interpretation of “Sin City” to Greenpoint. Goldie’s fills a need of a late night hangout in this part of the neighborhood near McGolrick Park. The place is cozy when less occupied without feeling empty and large enough to host a crowd, such as last Saturday’s opening night. The backyard is due to open in early fall.

According to co-owner Frank Bevan, the packed grand opening this past Saturday night was a spillover of a private party and included friends of the owners and neighborhood locals who had been eagerly awaiting the opening and passersby. Though the bar has an Instagram and Facebook page reserved, Goldie’s is not currently using social media as a promotional tool. Bevan said he believes in the bar’s success by filling a need in the area and through word of mouth.

The bar is stocked with a dozen beers on tap and many more in bottles and cans, wine and frozen cocktails. An expanded cocktail menu is in the works and Happy Hour runs from Monday through Friday 4-8pm with $2 off tap and $6 frozen margaritas.
